DIVINE SERVICE - SUNDAY 3RD MAY 2020

BIBLE TEXT: Romans 6: 4-5

“Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the
dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been
united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection.”

SERVICE HEADING: DEATH AND RESURRECTION

MESSAGE: We live in the Lord

The act of baptism washes away original sin, but it is also a reference being buried with Christ and
resurrecting with Christ. At our baptism we made the decision to be dead to sin and to live in Christ. Only
those who share in the death and resurrection of Christ, and who accompany Him upon His path, will attain
salvation.

Baptism as death
It was on the cross that Jesus Christ gained the victory over sin. Although the forces of the evil one were
concentrated on Him with all their might, He still obeyed His Father to the end. We have chosen to
renounce the devil & all his work & ways, and to resist the evil one. Through baptism we have been
incorporated into the death of Jesus—but also into His resurrection. Jesus died so that whoever believes in
Him should have everlasting life (John 3: 16). We have surrendered ourselves to Jesus in faith and
obedience. We serve Him by proclaiming the gospel and thereby helping other human beings to find
salvation in Jesus Christ. Jesus persisted in His love for sinners to the very end, and stood up for them even
to the point of death. At our confirmation we vowed to remain faithful to Jesus until our end. We ask God
to help us remain faithful to this vow in all situations.

Baptism as resurrection
If we have died with Christ, we will also be raised with Him and walk in newness of life with Him.
 Baptism has fundamentally changed our relationship with God and thereby also our lives.
Believing in Jesus Christ and persevering in the battle against evil gives us access to grace; we no
longer need to carry around the burden of our sins (Romans 6: 14).
 We now live to the Lord (Romans 6: 10). Our aim is to show that it is indeed possible to resist the
evil one. Our mission is to tell others about the resurrection of Jesus—and the salvation that it
opens up for us.
 We perceive the nearness of God when we do what pleases Him (John 8: 29). The Lord gave His life
for us. His sacrifice is eternally valid. The Risen One is in the process of completing the work He has
begun in us (Philippians 1: 6). Indeed, we have no reason to break the promise we have made to
Him!

SUMMARY:

At our baptism, we made the decision to be dead to sin and to live in Christ.

At baptism human beings promise to renounce evil, to surrender themselves to God, and to remain faithful
to Him.

Faithfulness also entails that we spread the gospel to other people in order to help them come to faith in
Jesus Christ, and thus to salvation.
