1. SCOPE
- NIOEC standard specifications cover the general requirements for detailed engineering
procurements, testing inspection & construction of refinery/oil plant, distribution depots,
pump stations and pipe lines.
- This specification defines the scope of work and procedures to be used in the acid brick lining
of the neutralization pits.
2. REFERENCES
Throughout this Specification the following dated and undated standards/codes are referred to
these referenced documents shall, to the extent specified here form a port of this Specification.
For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any
supplements and amendments) applies. For dated references, the edition cited applies.
The applicability of changes in dated references that occur after the cited date, shall mutually
be agreed upon by NIOEC and Vender / Contractor.
3. UNITS
International system of unites (SI) shall be used in accordance with NIOEC-SP-00-10, unless
otherwise specified.
4. GENERAL

5. MATERIALS
6. PROCEDURE
6.2.1 After the concrete surface has been inspected and found to be acceptable, apply a
single coat of asphalt primer to the entire concrete surface leaving absolutely no holes.
Asphalt primer should be applied with a stiff brush. Allow primer to dry for a
minimum of (8) hours, keeping dust or dirt away from the surface.
6.2.2 Apply cold troweled acid proof membrane using a squeegee to minimum thickness of
3 mm (1/8") in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations. Do not apply
asphalt at temperatures below 40° F (4° C) or over damp concrete.
6.2.4 Brick laying – Apply mortar bed joint directly to the membrane or to lower course of
brick. Butter each brick and press into place tapping with the trowel handle to insure
proper seat squeezing excess mortar from joint, and eliminating all voids. A nominal

1/8″ (3mm) or smaller joint is required. Excess mortar protruding from the joints shall
be cut off with the edge of the trowel leaving a clean surface.
6.2.5 Floor expansion joints – Lay entire first course of wall brick all the way around the pit.
Lay the floor inside the wall brick leaving a space inside the wall brick twice the width
of the anticipated expansion requirement of the floor. Fill the open joint thus formed
with twisted asbestos fiber, filling the cavity, but not wedging to permit brick
movement to compress the joint 50٪.
6.2.6 All cutting of brick shall be done by power saw outside of the pit to prevent chips and
other foreign particles from falling on the membrane. All brick shall be dried before
apply mortar. Acid proof masonry shall be kept dry until cure is complete.
6.2.7 All spoil and rubbish shall be removed from the worksite.
7. PLACING IN SERVICE
Curing time required before placing in service: Seven days with temperature of 70°F (21°C)
14 days with temperature of 50° F (10°C).
8. INSPECTION
- NIOEC' s inspector shall verify that procedures outlined herein are followed, unless revised
procedures have been approved in writing by NIOEC.
- Continuous observation shall be made by NIOEC's inspector, to assure that the procedures
used result in a satisfactory brick lining.
- Inspection and approval of materials and procedures by NIOEC shall not relieve the contractor
of his responsibilities.
