REPORT

ON

APICULTURE

INTRODUCTION
Beekeeping (or apiculture, from Latin apis, bee) is the
maintenance of honey bee colonies, commonly in hives, by
humans. A beekeeper (or apiarist) keeps bees in order to
collect honey and beeswax, to pollinate crops, or to produce
bees for sale to other beekeepers. A location where bees are
kept is called an apiary.

Beekeeping in INDIA is mainly forest based Decentralised

industry . Beekeeping is and ideal activity for development as
a subsidiary occupation providing supplementary income to
large number of rural , hilly , tribal populations and also
richflora available in country . The most valuable return of
the industry is the Honey and Wax and pollination service
rendered by bees, which increases yields at many of the
agriculture and horticulture crops.

Honey bees are dependent on flowering plants for their food

: pollen and nectar. Pollen is a protein source and nectar is a
carbohydrate source to bees. Continuous availability of
forage to bees is of prime importance for stationary
beekeeping. In other words, there should be plants which
flower round the year. Any gap in flowering for more than
two weeks can result in dwindling and desertion of bee
colonies. The density of the bee plants is another factor
which decides the available food and the colony number in a
location.

HONEY- The Most nutritious Food For All

Honey means the most beautiful thing . Honey is sweet
liquid gathered by honey bees from nectar or other
secretions of plants, which they transform by addition
of enzymes and evaporation of water in it. Honey is the
most wonderful GIFT OF GOD and MOTHER NATURE
TO THE MANKIND. Honey is held in high esteem , next
only to AMRIT, the Ambrosia, it was the only
sweetening agent known to the early man , and
naturally found its way into traditions, rituals , customs
and food of every religion , cast creed nation. It is the
sweetest way to get your daily dose of essential
nutrients like carbohydrates, minerals and amino acids,
proteins and vitamins; It is the most COMPLETE
NATURAL FOOD and that too PRE DIGESTED by the
honeybees.

USES OF HONEY BEE

Honey bees are one of the important primitive
social insects as well as a rich source of honey.
Honey has been traditionally used in various diet
preparations, medicines, cosmetics, ointments,
candles and house-hold bee-wax items1, besides
Ayurvedic drug preparations.
The propolis of the bee hive is used in lip balms
and tonics, whereas royal jelly is used to
strengthen the human body, for improving
appetite, preventing aging of skin, leukaemia and
for the treatment of other cancers.
On an estimate, about 80% of honey is used
directly in medicines and 10% is used in Ayurvedic
and pharmaceutical production.

Honey bees during foraging for pollen and nectar

from flowers of different plant species, enhance
agricultural productivity to the tune of 30–80%
annually through cross-pollination.

TYPES OF HONEY BEES

Five species of honey bees are found all
Over the world, namely
Apis florea,

A. cerana,

A. dorsata,

A. mellifera

Trigona iridipennis.

However,
A. Cerana and A. mellifera are reared in hives
in India.

ROYAL JELLY
Royal Jelly is milky substance secreted by the
hypopharyngial gland of young worker bees to feed
queen and younger larvae. Worker bees and queen are
born from same fertilized eggs, but the differentiation
between development of queen and worker bees is
related to feeding of royal jelly during the larvae
stages.

USES OF ROYAL JELLY

1.Natural Revitaliser
2.Rejuvenate Effect

3.Highly Nutritious Food

4.Cosmetics Preparation for skin and hair

5.Capsules , tablets and powders

Royal Jelly contains every essential nutrient

Like, Minerals ,Proteins , Amino Acids and
Other essential Fatty Acids necessary to
support
Human life.

HONEY MARKET–ACROSS THE GLOBE

Currently, China captures 40% of the world market and
the biggest importers of honey are Germany, Japan
and the United States.
Germany imports about 90,000 tonnes of honey
annually.

India produces about 70,000 tonnes of honey every

year of which 25–27,000 tonnes is being exported to
more than 42 countries, including the European Union,
Middle East and the United States.

The major honey-producing states in India are:

Punjab,

Haryana,

Uttar Pradesh,

Bihar and

West Bengal.

CONCLUSION
Our first industrial visit was to a Small Scale Industry
CENTRAL BEE RESARCH AND TRANING INSTITUTE, PUNE.

It was a great experience being a part of this visit. It was an

informative visit, which has given us a great exposer and let
us know the organizational hierarchy. Working structure
and marketing strategies of a SSI .

Honey being a natural product has high influence of

Environment and hence in different seasons different types
of honey and their by products are obtained.

This shows the dependence of any business/industry on

environment and the major challenges faced by it.

We have also come to know the global and domestic

competition faced by CBRTI and their strategy to meet this
competition.
