COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
1ST Semester, AY 2020-2021
EU 2 ENGINEERING UTILITIES 2
MODULE # 3
Plumbing Materials, Fittings and Fixtures

Name: Radoc, Jayronne, M. Date: November 6, 2020 Score: _______

(Family Name, Given Name MI.)
Year & Section: BSCE - 3E. Instructor: ENGR. ALYSSA MARIE C. BULATAO

Instruction: Read carefully the question. Use engineering lettering. Write your answer in the space
provided.

I.Exercises
1. Give the definition of the following parts of water closet. (1pt each)

Note : See page 158 on Architectural Utilities 1 by George Salvan for the original image for your
reference.

 Ball cock - a valve that automatically fills a tank after liquid has been drawn from it. Used, for
example, in a flush toilet, a ballcock has a float on the end of a pivoting arm that opens the valve
when the arm drops.

Page 1/1
 Valve Plunger - are regulating valves and enable engineers to finely control and regulate water flow and
pressure.
 Valve Seat - an internal combustion gasoline or diesel engine is the surface against which an
intake or an exhaust valve rests during the portion of the engine operating cycle when that valve is
closed.

1.4 Flush Valve - is a part inside the tank of a toilet that moves the water into the bowl. Toilet flush valves
come in different sizes ranging from 2 to 4 inches, depending on the toilet design.
1.5 Overflow tube - placed at the center of the tank that drains excess water into the bowl if the level in the
tank gets too high.
1.6 Lift arm - It is a piece that connects the flush handle to the lift chain or lift wire. When pulled, the chain
comes up and releases the flapper valve so the toilet can actually flush.
1.7 Lift wire - this is the mechanism by which the flush valve at the bottom if the tank is opened to let the water
flush down into the toilet bowl.
1.8 Thumb screw - offer a hand-adjustment feature, which allows for simple action to fasten, tighten,
loosen, or remove the screws.
1.9 Tank Refill Tube - It prevents the tank from overflowing, by directing extra water to the bowl. Goes into
the overflow tube and that water fills the bowl after each flush.

2. Give the definition of the following parts of bath tub (1pt each)

2.1 Hose Guide - is used for stand and bathtub fitting. It is fitted with a holder for shower hoses with conical
nut.
2.2 Washer - a small flat ring made of metal, rubber, or plastic fixed under a nut or the head of a bolt to
spread the pressure when tightened or between two joining surfaces as a spacer or seal.
2.3 Lock Nut - resist loosening under vibration and torque. There are many types of lock nut but they can
be broadly divided into those which use friction to prevent loosening and those that have some form of
positive locking device.
2.4 Hose - A hose is a flexible hollow tube designed to carry fluids from one location to another. Hoses are
also sometimes called pipes, or more generally tubing.
2.5 Copper Adapter - are used in hot and cold water lines in plumbing systems when making connections
to copper pipe. There are two basic types of copper pipe or tubing: rigid and flexible.

II. Additional Activities

Answer the following question. Write your answer in the space provided. (4pts each)
1. Why is it important to have a shut off valve in kitchen sink?
 Shut off valve is one of the most important in kitchen sink, it allows you to control your
water usage. Food is needed to be clean in a fast and easy way for healthy purposes.
Thats why shut off valve must placed in a kitchen sink.

2. In bath tub fixture, why there is a need of overflow pipe?

 Overflow pipe helps the bathroom sink to prevent overflowing, by letting air flows into the
drain while the sink is full of water so the sink drains water more quickly. Without this
draining water in a bathtub would be very hard, and many waste water would stock.

III.Reflection/Valuing
Instruction: Read the following question and give your own insights. (20pts)
1. Write your take always or learning in the module 3, Plumbing Materials, fixtures and fittings, 80-100
words or maximum.

 What I learn is every knowledge about plumbing is very useful and important, one of this is the
plumbing and sanitary principles where it guides you how to do proper plumbing and helps you to
minimize your mistakes. Then the techniques and design of plumbing system where it helps us to
think very carefully how we design the plumbing system of some buildings, and what technique we
will use in a different situation. And also the plumbing materials to familiarize us how the materials
and plumbing works and what is the use of it, this is a big help to plan and decide properly on your
preparation before do plumbing. Then we learn about many types of bathroom and kitchen
appliances where plumbing is needed. We use water in our daily life thats why plumbing is very
important in every houses and buildings, plumbing have a lot of role and purpose when it comes to
water, some of our daily works in life bocomes easier with the help of plumbing systems.
