Facts: Must have been there a while, knows directions and characters, Alice’s friend, smart
Likes:
Being alone, giving advice, talking about nonsense
Dislikes:
Moving around a lot, a lot of others around
Important things he does for the story:
-Tells Alice that she is crazy and befriends her. He states that everyone is mad, including
Alice. He makes it like a wake-up call to her and so she understands that wonderland isn’t
supposed to make sense. She tends to look out for him in a crisis because he is her only
friend in Wonderland. She offended almost everyone else. Looks for his advice (Alice looks
for Cheshire cat).
Origin:
- “Cheshire Cat” was a Victorian joke. There was a saying, “Grin like a Cheshire Cat” that
has an unknown origin/meaning. May have related to the famous cheese in the town of
Cheshire. It was made in the shape of a cat’s face to sell better. It relates because the
Cheshire Cat would often make its body disappear. It’s often missed by modern readers.
