CAESAREA PHILIPPI
๏ 37km north of Galilee
๏ OT times it had a shrine dedicated to Baal
๏ Greeks built a shrine to Pan, god of nature,
and called the place Paneas (the city of Pan).
๏ In 20 BC Herod the Great built a white
marble temple here, renamed it Caesarea
Philippi
๏ A beautiful place.

CHRIST
๏ “Christ” from Gk. christos =
“anointed.”
๏ Hebrew, Mashiach, or Messiah.
๏ So the Christ, or Messiah, is “the
anointed one of God.”
๏ Lit. anointing is the application of oil.
๏ Anointing was a symbolic act to
indicate God's selection (e.g., 1
Samuel 24:6).
๏ Kings, priests and prophets were
anointed—they were set apart,
chosen by God, e.g., 1 Samuel 10:1
DECAPOLIS
๏ Deka, ten, and polis, a city,
๏ E/SE Sea of Galilee —mostly Greeks.
๏ Matthew 4:25 ; Mark 5:20 ; 7:31
๏ Jesus cast out demons into pigs,
Gadara (Mark 5:9-20).
๏ Legion = 6000 soldiers
๏ Tombs - unclean in Jewish thinking,

๏ Accusers ignored the Law by
arresting the woman without the

THE FEAST OF
TABERNACLES
๏ Sukkot-The Feast of Tabernacles
๏ A joyous and happy time of giving
thanks to God for His provision.
๏ One of the three feasts that Jews
were to observe each year (Dt 16:16)—
[Passover, Pentecost, Tabernacles].
๏ Usually late Sept. to mid-Oct.—
autumn harvest had been completed.
๏ Lived and ate in booths / tents
๏ Remembering the wilderness—God
had fed them and gave them water,
their clothes did not to wear out.
๏ Waving the lulav.
๏ Testifying of the
Lord’s beauty and
bounty—all good
gifts come from
Him!
๏ Priests would go from the pool of
Siloam to the altar at the Temple
carrying water.
๏ Poured onto the altar—thanking God
for the coming winter rains and
harvest.
๏ Represented the pouring out of
God’s Spirit at the coming
of Messiah.
๏ [Water was a symbol of the Holy
Spirit e.g. Ezek 36:25, 47]
On this day Jesus cried out, Jn 7:37-38,
“If anyone is thirsty, let him come to
Me and drink. He who believes in Me,
as the Scripture said, from his
innermost being will flow rivers of
living water”
2 Kings 20:20, 2 Chronicles
32:30 Hezekiah “made the pool
and the tunnel by which he
brought water into the city…
from the Gihon spring.”
The Spring of Gihon was
Jerusalem’s most important
water supply—came out at the
Pool of Siloam.
