2. DETAILS OF ARTISTIC ACTIVITIES

a. Please state briefly (less than 120 words) your organisation’s primary purpose &
principal objectives:
1. This funding is crucial to sustain an Artist in Residence who creates important cultural links
between Cathal Brugha Barracks and key organisations in neighbouring Rathmine. This
approach puts imagination and creative process at the core believing that artistic expression has
something different and inclusive to offer all culminating in a large scale public opening on

long event of art workshops, music, food, games and entertainment in the heart of the barracks.
The Minister for Defence will attend the event
2
During 2019, as the ongoing 'artist in residence' in Cathal Brugha Barracks, Rathmines, I
progressed the existing arts programme by curating three significant public events (a)
International Women’s Day; (b) National Drawing Day and (c) Another successful opening
of this working barracks to the public for Culture Night with a footfall of 900 people. We
continued to foster partnerships with; ‘Gateway to Health, Rathmines’ and Novas Shelter
and Support Centre for Homeless Women and developed new ones with a mentoring
programme for an artist in the local community. The military opened its gates and provided
advertisement, personnel, hospitality, venues and sites. From the very positive feedback we
received, these events enriched the others view of the other and the barracks and its role in
society with the the organisation more embedded in its immediate community - just outside
its gates.

The barracks see the benefits for their personnel and organisation of this arrangement and
are totally committed to this residency but only continued funding from DCC, will allow
me the time necessary to expand and build on these positive experiences. Gateway to
Mental Health “Novas” Shelter and Suppport Centre for Homeless Women and local artist
(Gateway member) Sheila Melvin have all expressed a keen interest in continuing a
dialogue with the barracks (see letters of endorsement). These groups are very diverse in
age, background and ethnicity with social and personal experiences that make them
vunerable and isolated from their communities, and, have stated that they do not have
much/no funding for cultural or artistic pursuiits .Participation in art processes a joint

For Revenue applicants Only

For all other applicants:

Please describe your target group and, where relevant to the proposal, the level of their
involvement in the project design.

Our desire is to reach out to the immediate surroundings of the barracks and make new
connections through art and culture (see statement from the Colonel Sean O’Faherty
enclosed) so our target group is wide and varied. Our partners we have chosen are also
mixed from a self-helf group across the road to the local shelter and support centre for
Homeless Women “Novas” (recently relocated to Rathmines) (new). As an artist my
audience is the general public, the immediate personnel of the barracks and invited
cultural practioners in the city that are invited to my new art installations. E.G Pat Murphy
Dirctor RHA Maoliosa Boyle Rua Red Tallaght, Independent curator and writer Catherine
Marshall to see and discuss her new artwork “Kitty Dear Dear Kitty” in situ.
