Subject: petroleum refinery

Report Number: 3

Group number : B

Title: carbon residue

Reporter Name: Waleed Adnan Tahir

Date Of Submits: 3/11/2020

1
Observation
When a petroleum fraction is vaporized in the absence of air at atmospheric
pressure, the nonvolatile compounds have a carbonaceous residue known as
carbon residue (CR). Therefore, heavier fractions with more aromatic contents
have higher carbon residues while volatile and light fractions such as naphthas and
gasolines have no carbon residues. There are three different test methods to
measure carbon residues, Ramsbottom (ASTM D 524), the Conradson (ASTM D
189) and microcarbon (ASTM D 4530). In most cases carbon residues are reported
in wt%.

In lab we large amount of engine oil, and it needs a lot of time.

The apparatus wasn’t proper as well as not isolated.

Result and calculation

Weight of crucible =29.035 g

Weight of crucible with engine oil =37.148 g
Wight of engine oil = Weight of crucible with engine oil - Weight of crucible
=37.148-29.035=8.113 g
After experiment
Wight of crucible with engine oil after experiment =29.087g
Wight of carbon residue = Wight of crucible with engine oil after experiment
- Weight of crucible =29.087-29.035 =0.052g

Weight of tank before experiment =136.11 g

Weight of tank after experiment =136.25 g
Weight of carbon residue without tank = Weight of tank after experiment -
Weight of tank before experiment =136.25-136.11 =0.14 g
Total carbon residue = carbon residue 1 +carbon residue 2
Total carbon residue= 0.052 g + 0.14 = 0.192 g
Percentage of carbon residue =(total carbon residue)/(weight of engine oil) ×
100%
Percentage of carbon residue=(0.192)/(8.113) × 100% = 2.366 %

Discussion

1. What’s a definition of carbon residue?

Carbon residue is the amount of carbon that is made by a chemical process, such
as heating up oil. It is mainly considered to be a by-product of fuel.
2. How many methods to calculate carbon residue?
There are three methods to calculate this carbon residue. It may be expressed as
Ramsbottom carbon residue (RCR), Conradson carbon residue (CCR) or
micro carbon residue (MCR). Numerically, the CCR value is the same as that of
MCR.
3. Why we have some errors in this experiment?
1. Because the apparatus isn’t proper as well as not isolated.
2. In this experiment accurate flame temperature is required. But proper pressure of
gas wasn’t available.
4. What’s the disadvantage of carbon residue on engine?
It causes erosion and corrosion of the internal parts of engine.
5. The value of carbon residue of a fuel depend on what?
Fuels with a high carbon residue value may cause problems in older engines when
they are operating under part load conditions. The carbon residue value of a fuel
depends on the refinery processes employed in its manufacture.
