This practice paper is for the ABRSM Grade 5 syllabus.
It contains 7 questions. You should answer them all.
You are allowed 2 hours to complete this paper which is out of 100.
Question 1. Take a look at the extracts of music and answer the questions. 15
a) i) The passage is in 7/8 and begins on the first beat of the bar, but is missing bar lines. Add them in. (8)
ii) Describe the largest interval (minor 3rd, perfect 5th etc) in the extract. …………………………. (2)
iii) The passage above is in the key of C minor. What other key has the same key signature? (2)

Question 4. This is a piece of music written for a cornet in A. Write it out at concert pitch ( a 10
minor 3rd lower ). You don’t need to use a key signature, but you should include all the
sharps, flats and natural signs as appropriate.

a) Using semibreves ( whole notes ) write one octave ascending of the chromatic scale beginning on the (5)
note shown below. Remember to add in any necessary sharps, flats or natural signs.
b) Write the correct key signature and one octave ascending of the major scale with 6 sharps as it’s key (5)
signature. Use semibreves (whole notes) beginning on the tonic and add in any necessary sharps, flats
or natural signs.
