WHAT IS FOSSIL FUELS – CLIMATE IMPACT
Fossil fuels are hydrocarbons, primarily coal, fuel oil or natural gas, formed from the remains
of dead plants and animals.

Fossil fuels are called so because they have been derived from fossils, which were formed
millions of years ago during the time of the dinosaurs

They are fossilized organic remains that over millions of years have been converted to oil, gas,
and coal. Because their formation takes so long, these sources are also called non-renewable.

These fuels are found in the Earth's crust and contain carbon and hydrogen, which can be
burned for energy.

This material is heated in order to produce the thick oil that can be used to make gasoline.

Burning fossil fuels emits a number of air pollutants that are harmful to both the environment and public health.
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions, primarily the result of burning coal, contribute to acid rain and the formation of
harmful particulate matter.
