Parenting Decisions

James is a 13 year old teenager in Grade 7 at school. His parents have recently divorced and
share custody of James. His father Brett has noticed a shift in James’s behaviour over the last few
weeks. During conversations, James is abrupt, curt and tries to avoid conversation. Most recently,
James’s English teacher at school requested a parent-teacher interview because James has been
caught lying about why his homework wasn’t completed. When his father (Brett) asks James about
it, he just says: “Mum knows about it, so why should I talk to you about it?” When asked about why
he has responded that way, James ignores his father and storms into his room. James’s father
(Brett) has spoken James’s mother (Doreen) recommending James speak with a professional
counsellor.

Doreen disagrees and believes that he’s just going through a stage and that it’s more likely
due to his father’s poor parenting skills. James parents both have opposing views on the subject.
James’s Dad (Brett) decides to take action without Doreen’s knowledge and books an
appointment for James to see a therapist.

Instructions: Read and analyze the counselling dilemma. Write the answer on the space provided.

Kaya and Mark have been in a relationship for a little over a year now and are attending
couples counselling. Halfway through the session, the therapist asks for more information about
the fights they are having. Kaya reports that Mark recently pushed her into a wall, and that he
sometimes viciously pulls things like her phone, the TV remote amongst others out of her hand.
Mark admits to this, and responds by accusing Kaya of pushing him once, which Kaya says was in
self-defence. When Kaya first met Mark he was extremely charming and always kind to her, if at
times a little possessive and jealous (which at the time she found flattering). Now he seems to
have become this whole other person. Kaya tried to leave him at one point, however he followed
her to her friend’s house and nearly broke down the door demanding she come home, which she
did. Kaya wants to leave but hasn’t, as Mark threatens to kill himself when she has attempted to
leave.

from reality and ultimately aiming to de-stress her. And Jasmine, who became an
alcoholic when her husband died in her arms from an operation that went terribly
wrong.

medical grounds. During her four years in the Army, Leah experienced high levels
of stress and anxiety which she coped with by drinking heavily.

mother’s estate. He was experiencing a lot of anger with the issue and also with
his brother, Frank, who was joint inheritor. Frank was facing bankruptcy and needed
the proceeds of the sale of the family home to save his business.

by “a mate” to attend counselling to control his anger. In short Gary was a
perpetrator of physical abuse against his intimate female partner, Julie, who is 22
years of age. The couple have no children but his partner has recently expressed
a desire to have a child with him.
