MODULE TWO OVERVIEW

(To be given either as a recorded video material or a PPT with embedded audio by Teacher)

In module 1 you were introduced to the various models of faith. These models represent various
faith approaches which we see here as “Models” of Faith. This Course therefore presents various
Faith approaches: the Intellectualist approach, Fiducial approach, Performative approach, and
Synthesizing approach. In the Intellectualist approach, we examine faith as a reasonable act of
belief. In the Fiducial approach we explore how faith is viewed as an act of trust. In the
performative approach, faith is understood as an engaged belief with respect to one’s setting or
milieu. Finally, in the synthesizing approach, we see faith as an integration of these previous
approaches for a wholistic and balanced approach/. Overall, in the first module, we addressed the
following objectives:
a. We identified how faith convictions developed in response to the individual’s
developmental growth and changed circumstance
b. We classified these faith expressions based on Faith models
c. We described an ecclesial movement and explored concrete examples
d. And finally, we analyzed the concept of faith in the Hebrew-Jewish context

This time, we proceed to the next level: Module 2. In Module 2 we revisit the age-old debate
between science and religion. Is there a conflict between these two? What does this mean in
terms of believing?
So what should we expect from Module 2?
First, we want to see the role of reason in cultivating and nurturing faith. Second, we need to
explain the philosophical worldviews/ historical contexts that fostered the development of an
intellectualist faith, third, we want to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of an intellectualist
view of faith. And finally, we need to differentiate the distinct character of scientific inquiry
from theological/ faith inquiries by being able to articulate the scope and limits of both science
and religion.
To achieve our objectives, we shall spend 2 meetings or one week for this Module, specifically
the second meeting of Week 4 and the first meeting of Week 5. This Module comprise Five
Activities or Tasks and one 4th Hour task side by side the Online inputs.
To complement your activities, you are provided with reading materials which you can access
online via Animospace through the Files as well as Video materials (through web links) which
you will watch to complete your Module tasks (links are either from shared google drive folder
“LCFAITH Resources” or Canvas Files).
I wish that you are able to navigate through these activities and materials as you begin the
journey of understanding an Intellectualist faith model. Good Day!
