ECC3014: ENGINEERING STATISTICS

SEMESTER 1 2018/2019
ASSIGNMENT 1

PROBLEM 1 (WP1, WP3)

It has been established that the selection for the flight attendants of an airline is based on
the height of the candidates. The data on the height of previous 100 flight attendants hired
by the airline company is collected and presented in Table 1.

a) Prepare appropriate presentation of the collected data in the forms of bar chart, stem-
and-leaf diagram and box-plot diagram. Show the working procedures and calculations
involved for full marks.
(CO2, PO1, C3)

b) Solve for the mean, median, trimmed mean, mode and standard deviation of the flight
attendants' height of this airlines.
(CO2, PO1, C3)

c) Analyze the collected data to estimate the probability that a candidate with higher than or
equal to 180 cm height will be selected for the job as flight attendant by this airline company.
(CO1, PO1, C4)

PROBLEM 2 (WP1, WP3)

The delay data for two airlines that are serving the Kuala Lumpur-Alor Setar route is
tabulated in Table 2 and Table 3. Compare which of these two airlines have a better
performance in terms of expected and standard deviation for the delay of their flights.
(CO1, PO1, C4)

PROBLEM 3 (WP1, WP3)

A, B, C and D work as among 100 pilots for Airline A. The pilots are paired for certain flight
routes (as captain and co-pilot) and the scheduling is made monthly. Solve for the
probability for the following scheduling situations:
(a) A and D are paired together
(b) A is not paired together with B or C
(c) C is paired with B or D as the captain
(d) B or C as the co-pilot
(CO1, PO1, C3)

PROBLEM 4 (WP1, WP3)

The probability that a regularly scheduled flight of Airline A departs on time is P(D) = 0.8,
the probability that it arrives on time is P(A) = 0.8 and the probability that it departs and
arrives on time is 0.68. On the other hand, scheduled flight of Airline B that is serving the
same route has a probability to depart on time as P(D) = 0.9, the probability that it arrives on
time is P(A) = 0.7 and the probability that it departs and arrives on time is 0.8.

Compare which airline has the higher probability that their flight:
(a) arrives on time given that it departed on time
(b) departed on time given that it has arrived on time
(CO1, PO1, C4)
