Teaching:
Quality over Quantity

In the past years of education, quality of teaching has no big allotment for improving

instructional quality compared at this time.

The impact of the three colonizers is still reflected on the present-day educational

system’s thinking and practices. The Educational Decree of 1863 made possible the

establishment of a complete secondary and collegiate levels of instruction. The Philippine

Educational System is a clear example of a boat sailing in a body of changes and challenges.

It has in fact followed the same pattern of education as that of the rest of the world (de

Guzman, 2003). The world is changing and there are already numerous methods, skills, and

practices that can make a teacher effective. Being an effective teacher means letting an

atmosphere that allows students to acquire knowledge in the classroom to their best

capabilities and teachers plays a crucial role as they mold students for nation-building. When

a competent teaching is practicing the necessary standards of education framework as it is

being realized to sustain quality of education. 2

The Department of Education has consistently pursued teacher quality

transformations through a numerous of initiatives and one of this is the National Adoption in

Implementation of the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST) in the pursuant

to the DO 42, s 2017. Teaching quality is what PPST emphasizing aside from other concerns.

This approach is distinct from professional development that asks teachers to focus on

improving the teaching of a particular topic or a particular set of skills. Instead it focuses on

enhancing teaching in general (Gorre, Harris, & Miller, 2018). As educational system facing

changes from national and global frameworks, such as K-12 program reforms, and 21 st

century skills of learners, it is necessary for teachers to comply from the basic skills to highly

competent skills. Teacher Professional Development framework has four (4) stages in

determining their teaching competences for learning, and it follows with the 7 domains in

teaching profession from the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers which can help
me as a guide for improvement in teaching. As a future teacher I know education is a

continuous progression. It doesn’t stop after getting a degree and starting a career. Having K-

12 curriculum program, it is above all important to encourage teachers to pursue professional

development, to ensure the best learning outcomes for their students but also to be more

effective and satisfied in various other aspects of their work.

Learning PPST will have a big utilization in my career path to become a teacher, it

will serve as a guide for me to set my own standards to meet the qualification in quality of

teaching as mandated by the Philippine education. According to the news article in the

inquirer.net of Gunigundo (2017), We need two things to improve teacher quality in our

country: professional standards for teachers and school leaders, and he added that the PPST

acknowledges that our teachers are highly motivated, have a strong work ethic, and are eager

to do better, despite being overwhelmed with tedious and complicated approaches to many

aspects of their professional life. It is really indeed crucial that as a becoming teacher, we can

already adapt by the alterations brought by the trends of education. PPST helps me aware the

anticipations for teachers’ increasing knowledge, practice and professional engagement

across four career stages (beginning, proficient, highly proficient and distinguished teachers).

According to the study of de Guzman, entitled The Dynamics of Educational Reforms in the

Philippine Basic and Higher Education Sectors. He emphasized that in any changes from the

educational system it needs a higher degree of system’s quality. It is an indeed that teaching

profession is not only a job but a vocation or calling, because teachers exerts effort in

adapting the changes of educational system is their whole life just to provide the best quality

of learning that the student deserves.

As an education student, those methods and necessary domains that we must possess

in the future is very important as Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers mandated,
because it can able the students to be equipped and the country to become globally competent

in education. 3
