14 Read the text and answer the questions.

Five years ago my friend Kevin and I decided that we wanted to have a quiet holiday on a Greek
Island. We went to the travel agent and booked a wonderful holiday on the island of Paxos. The
problems started when we arrived at Gatwick airport - the plane left five hours late!

We finally arrived at our hotel at 3.00 a.m. and we were very tired. We went to the hotel
reception and gave the receptionist our names but he said that we weren’t on his list! Finally
that problem was solved and he showed us to our room. But when we opened the door we saw
that the room was very dirty and there were some insects in the bathroom. It was awful!

Our holiday continued and every day was worse than the day before. It rained for two weeks,
the food was terrible and the ‘quiet hotel’ was near an all-night disco. We were very happy
when the holiday finished and we could go home.

This is a true story which happened to me when I was a student in 1996. It was my second year
at university and my two friends Sally, Nicki and I were looking for a cheap flat to live in.
There was a very nice area near the university where a lot of famous people lived, and we
decided to look there. We were very surprised when one day we found the perfect place which
was incredibly cheap. We rented it immediately. But on the first night the problems started.
While we were sleeping in our own bedrooms we heard a person walking in the hall. The
second night was terrible because we heard the tables and chairs moving in the living room.
When we got up the next morning the furniture was in different places. The third night it was
raining a lot and at about one o’clock in the morning a man’s voice said “Leave, leave, leave!”.
Of course we left immediately.
We never returned again and other students told us that the house was always empty and cheap
because there was an angry ghost who lived there. What do you think?

We lived in an old house near an enormous factory where my father worked. There wasn’t

There were two or three shops near my house, I think there was a supermarket, a chemist’s and

which was about half an hour by bus from my house. My mother and I always went there on a

my mother always bought me something for helping her with the shopping.
There weren’t any cinemas or discos near my house, so in the evenings I usually stayed in and

The most frightening experience I’ve ever had was when I was on holiday in Venezuela three
years ago. I decided to go there to visit some friends who lived in Caracas.
On the third night I went out for dinner with my friends, and we found a restaurant which
looked perfect.
While we were having dinner, suddenly four men walked into the restaurant. They were
wearing black masks and carrying shotguns. ‘Give us all your money and jewellery!’ they
shouted. ‘If you don’t do what we say, we’ll kill you.’
Of course my friends gave them everything they had with them, including a gold ring. After
about three minutes the men left. The police arrived five minutes later but it was too late to
catch the thieves. My friends took me back to my hotel. We were all frightened, depressed and
of course much poorer.
