Syllabus (Unit-4)
UNIT – IV Self and Mutual inductance: Self and mutual inductance –
determination of self-inductance of a solenoid and toroid and mutual
inductance between a straight long wire and a square loop wire in the
same plane – energy stored and density in a magnetic field.

Outline of the Presentation

 Self and mutual inductance; Coefficient of coupling

 Determination of self-inductance of a solenoid and toroid

 Mutual inductance between a straight long wire and a square loop wire

 Determination of energy stored and density in a magnetic field

Objectives & Outcomes

SELF AND MUTUAL INDUCTANCE

 When two loops with or without contacts between them affect
each other through the magnetic field generated by one of
them, it called magnetically coupled.
Example: Transformer

 It called self inductance because it relates the voltage

induced in a coil by a time varying current in the same coil.

COUPLING COEFFICIENT (k)

M
k M  k L1 L2
L1 L2
 It is measure of the magnetic coupling between two coils.
 Range of k : 0 ≤ k ≤ 1
• k = 0 means the two coils are NOT COUPLED.

• k = 1 means the two coils are PERFECTLY COUPLED.

• k < 0.5 means the two coils are LOOSELY COUPLED.

• k > 0.5 means the two coils are TIGHTLY COUPLED.

Inductances in Series or Parallel

 With no mutual coupling:
 For series circuits, inductances add just like
resistances.
Leq = L1 + L2 + L3 + ...
 For parallel circuits, inductances combine
according to a reciprocal formula as with
resistances.
