OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT UHURU KENYATTA

MR PRESIDENT STOP COVID19 GENOCIDE.

Mr. President, we wish to somberly remind you that the country is being ravaged by the Covid 19
virus, even as we politic. While we are aware that you know this, we write to remind you that this
has greatly been fueled by selective application of the law. Kenya's top political leadership, the big
3, that include yourself, your deputy and the prime minister are holding political rallies in various
parts of the country against your own government’s directives.

While ordinary citizens have been maimed and killed by law enforcement agencies for flouting
curfew hours and for not wearing masks, the political class which has caused more harm than good
seems to be immune to the measures that you so clearly spelt out in your last address to the nation
on the status of the Covid 19 pandemic in the country. It is time for your government to drink the
water it preaches. There is a sense of selectiveness when none other than your Cabinet Secretary in
charge of health on numerous occasions blames ordinary citizens for the spread of the virus, while
at the same time playing safe with the political class.

Mr. President, you need to immediately put a stop to this recklessness by the political class that is
killing Kenyans at a very alarming rate. Why can’t the rules prescribed to the general population be
applied to the political class as well? The constitution allows you to use all the power and resources
at your disposal to stop the pandemic from decimating the citizens who elected you to the office that
you now hold and the same citizens who are now at the mercy of the pandemic after your
governments direction that NHIF will not pay for Covid19 treatment. Does this mean that your
universal healthcare plan under the big 4 agenda was just a theory? Your Excellency was the
withdrawal of NHIF from covering COVID 19 treatment approved by you and in extension your
cabinet?

We have seen how passionate you are about your handshake baby, the BBI but in the current
circumstances we passionately urge you to put the project on hold until this pandemic is contained.
Mr. President without any prejudice, the “unity” you are pursuing through your pet project will be
meaningless since as you are very aware, you cannot unite a population ravaged by poverty, hunger,
sickness, unemployment and a myriad of other problems, due to the failure by your government to
contain the spreading pandemic.

With utmost respect, Mr. President, we urge you to direct all your energy into containment of the
deadly virus. The same politicians galivanting around the country have started succumbing to the
disease. Our frontline health care workers are dying by the day. Our facilities are overwhelmed with
the infected. The curve is on a very dangerous upward trajectory and pretty soon the pandemic will
become a threat to National Security. Why wait for us to get there?

1
It is a fact that a wealthy nation is as a result of a healthy and vibrant population. Without a healthy
population, you cannot grow the economy.
Mr. President an economy grows because healthy citizens are able to work and pay taxes hence
contributing to the GDP of a country and consequently driving economic growth. If the spread of
the pandemic is not arrested by limiting interactions, then we are looking at a country of people
living in abject poverty, in the very near future.

Mr. President neither mass testing nor progress on vaccines at KEMRI Laboratories in Kilifi County,
both vital arrows in our epidemiological quiver, both key parts of our fight against Covid 19 are at
the present time a substitute for the national restrictions, for social distancing, for hand hygiene and
all the rest. There is no other milder approach than reducing personal contacts to try and stop the
infections chain and to change the course of the infections back to a level where we can handle it.
Sir, you have no choice but to take the country back to the basics.

Finally, to our fellow citizens let’s remember the basics, HANDS, FACE, SPACE.

Signed;

Miruru Waweru Fredrick. T. Okango

National Chairman. Secretary General
