In my elementary classroom field placement at Evans City
Elementary, I created and taught lessons for a third-grade classroom. Incorporating a read aloud with a reading strategy, I taught students how to use a ‘Who Wanted But So Then’ organizer to summarize a biographical text. Graphic organizers can help students organize thoughts and more concisely communicate the main idea of a text. To teach this lesson, I modeled the strategy with a text they read the day before about Ruby Bridges. Then, while reading aloud I am Jackie Robinson I pointed out details that would eventually go into our ‘Who Wanted But So Then’ organizer. After reading, I guided the students through the first part of the graphic organizer. The students worked independently and shared their answers with a partner. Finally, we discussed the summaries the students created. Summarizing a text is important because it shows that the students comprehended the text. This graphic organizer not only showed that students comprehended the key details, but they could integrate the central ideas of the text in a meaningful way.
