Cempaka who are present here today for the launching of our school’s ‘Road
Safety Week’. With the apparent increase in the number of road accidents
lately, it is crucial for young people like yourselves to ponder on the reasons
why road accidents occur so as to tackle the problem more effectively.
Studies have shown that majority of the victims of road accidents
happen to be youngsters who are prone to speed and drive recklessly on the
road. This factor goes hand in hand with the increase in illegal racing that is
popular among young drivers who seek fun unlawfully.
During long distance travel on the road, drivers tend to get tired and
bleary-eyed especially when they are driving on a straight highway. The loss
of concentration can lead to a drastic crash in the middle of the journey.
Besides that, people do not care for their vehicles properly. In fact,
vehicles are just like people. Proper check-up and treatment are essential to
ensure smooth running of the vehicles. The government is also of fault for
not maintaining good road conditions for the drivers.
Scrutinizing the reasons mentioned, I suggest that the government
should impose strict enforcement of traffic rules such as increasing fines,
increasing the age limit for new drivers and suspension of driving licence.
Through this, adults and young drivers would be more wary of their driving
and thus avoid road accidents.
Drivers should also be driving road worthy vehicles. This means that vehicles
must be in tip-top condition to be taken on the road. Drivers must adopt the
habit to send their vehicles in for maintenance at the appropriate time.
Last but not least, awareness campaigns such as our ‘Road Safety
Week’ is vital to instil awareness about road safety to drivers, pedestrians
and everyone who uses the road for any purpose at all.
