Obesity

Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that
presents a risk to health.
A body mass index (BMI) over 25 is considered overweight, and over 30 is obese.
Causes
Obesity adolescence can be related to:

 Poor eating habits


 Lack of exercise
 Family history of obesity: If one parent is obese, there is a 50 percent chance
that his or her child will also be obese. However, when both parents are obese,
their children have an 80 percent chance of being obese.
 Medical illnesses (endocrine, neurological problems)
 Stressful life events or changes (separations, divorce, moves, deaths, abuse)
 Low self-esteem
 Depression or other emotional problems

 Increased risk of heart disease


 High blood pressure
 Diabetes
 Breathing problems
 Trouble sleeping
 Hormonal changes

Ways to manage obesity in children and adolescents include:

 Start a weight-management program


 Change eating habits (eat slowly, develop a routine)
 plan meals and make better food selections
 Control portions and consume less calories
 Increase physical activity
