15 Driven by Combustion engine

1. It should be possible to change the flow rate of the pump through the change of the
motor speed.

2. The pump should be made of the following materials: housing in carbon steel, shaft in
stainless steel, screws in stainless steel with hardened edges, and the rest of
components should be specified in the offer.

3. The construction materials of the pump and its accessories should be according to the
operation conditions, the pumped fluid and the API 676 Standard.

4. The pump should have a relief valve. This relief valve should be set at 10% higher than
the operation pressure of the pump. The relief valve should be made of cast iron with
components in 316 SS, seals and gasket according to the application. The relief valve
should meet the API 502 Standard and API 526 Standard, as appropriate. The relief
valve should be calibrated and tested from factory.

5. The pump should be provided with a heating jacket of water steam. The heating jacket
should be designed to be fed with saturated steam @ 14,06 Kg/cm² (200 psig) in the
inlet. It should have its own discharge of steam.

6. The lubrication of the seal should be provided with a cooling system for the used liquid
as refrigerant, so that the cooling system becomes in a closed system to avoid the
waste of refrigerant. As example: a system of forced air with a radiator. Each set of
double seals should have its own lubrication plan. The lubrication plan should be
equipped with instrumentation and control to automatic verification of the operation of
the mechanical seal and shutdown of the pump in the case of fault in the mechanical
seal. The lubrication plan should have a level sensor, a pressure switch and a
temperature sensor.

7. The bearings should be lubricated by oil. The bearing housings should have an
eyehole for monitoring the oil level, dust retainer with filling plugs and drain plug of oil.
The manufacturer should select the best bearings for the application. The following
information about the bearings should be specified in the offer: type, brand name,
model number and life time in operation hours. The bearings of the pump should be
external.

8. As part of the pump, the pressure switches for the suction and discharge should be
provided. Each switch should be provided with its respective connections to send the
pressure signal to the control panel.

9. The baseplate should have the needed holes for the fixation to the base of concrete.
The baseplate should have enough rings for lifting and translation of equipment and
screws for adjustment in two horizontal directions.

10. All the couplings, mobile parts, etc., should have a safety guard made of rigid mesh or
metallic sheet to prevent accidents and these safety guards should be easily
removable to do maintenance tasks.

11. The pumping equipment should be aligned and set on a baseplate made of structural
steel. All welding should meet the AWS Standard. All corners should be rounded. The
baseplate of steel should be cleaned through sandblasting and painted with two layers
of anticorrosive and one final layer.

12. If a speed reducer gearbox is needed, the speed reducer gearbox should meet the
following specifications:

12.1. The speed reducer gearbox should have a service factor of 1.75 higher than
the nominal power of the motor or to meet the manufacturer recommendation.
12.2. The speed reducer gearbox should meet AGMA 6010 Standard for
continuous operation.
12.3. The speed reducer gearbox should be coupled to the motor and pump
through flexible coupling, preferably with hydraulic coupling.
12.4. The speed reducer gearbox should have a lubrication system with all the
required accessories for an adequate operation as eyehole for oil level, filling plug,
drain plug, etc.
12.5. The speed reducer gearbox should have the instrumentation and the
respective connection to send a signal to the control panel for low oil pressure.
12.6. The speed reducer gearbox should have a cooling system for its oil.

Internal combustion engine


1. The combustion engine should be designed for continuous operation (24 hours by day,
365 days by year).

2. The combustion engine should be tropicalized, turbocharged and with post-cooling.

3. The combustion engine should be able to supply all the power points required by the
pump, according to the described operation conditions. The weather conditions of the
zone should be considered. The power losses in the couplings and speed reducer
gearbox should be considered.

4. The combustion engine in its normal operation point should operate at 80% of its
maximum power, free of losses.

5. The combustion engine should have a variable speed. The speed range and the
normal operation speed should be indicated.

6. For the combustion engine is acceptable, to supply the combustion engine with a
power transmitter, type reducer – multiple speed changer of operation dual automatic
and manual.

7. The combustion engine should meet the NFPA 37 and NFPA 70 standards.

8. The fuel will be fuel oil #2 (diesel).

9. The combustion engine should operate in a non-classified zone.

10. The combustion engine should have the following accessories:

10.1. Air filters, fuel filters and their status indicators.


10.2. Oil filters.
10.3. Start system through electric starter.
10.4. Cooling system through radiator. The radiator should be designed for the
maximum power of the combustion engine, considering the site conditions. The
radiator should be able to be installed on the same baseplate of steel of all the
assembly and the radiator should have all the required accessories to ensure a
good operation. The quantity of refrigerant to fill the system twice should be
supplied. All the system should operate automatically; therefore, all the required
instrumentation should be supplied. Under an emergency case, the system should
allow to operate manually.
10.5. Scape system. A silencer should be supplied. The silencer should be
industrial type. The silencer should have flexible couplings in stainless steel and
their respective union systems.
10.6. Fuel feeding system. The following items should be supplied: double filters
(duplex system) with their drain valves, transfer pump, flexible couplings to
connection to the combustion engine, etc.
10.7. Vibration dampers to be installed in site between the metallic baseplate of
the combustion engine and the concrete base, in the case that the manufacturer
considers it as needed.
10.8. Speed governor.
10.9. Manual clutch.
10.10. Lubrication system with level indicator and eyehole for the oil tank.
10.11. Shaft of coupling.

Instrumentation and Control Panel

1. All required instrumentation should be manufactured and installed according to API PR


- 551 Standard (“Process Measurement Instrumentation”). All required instrumentation
should meet the applicable requirements of the NFPA. All equipment should be
approved by UL.

2. The control panel should be designed to be installed in a classified zone as Class 1,


Div. 2, Group D and the control panel should be installed on the common baseplate of
all the pumping equipment. The control panel should be disposed so that it is easily
accessible.

3. The cabinet of the control panel should be perfectly hermetic to avoid the entry of
water. The cabinet of the control panel should be protected with anticorrosive paint,
marine environment resistant, or made of stainless steel. Boxes of instruments with
positive pressure won’t be accepted.

4. The control panel should have an alarm system with visual and sounder indication,
under a false alarm case.

5. The control panel should indicate when occurs any of the following failures:
5.1. High temperature of refrigerant liquid.
5.2. Over speed.
5.3. Low level of refrigerant liquid.
5.4. Low pressure of oil in the combustion engine and low pressure of oil in the speed
reducer gearbox.
5.5. Low level of oil in the combustion engine.
5.6. Low suction pressure in the pump.
5.7. High discharge pressure.
5.8. High temperature in the bearings of the pump.
5.9. Any other protection control considered as needed by the manufacturer, which it
should be indicated in the offer.
5.10. An alarm signal should be sent to the control panel when the filters are dirty
or saturated as the filters of oil, air and fuel.

Other analog instruments that the control panel should have:

1. Pressure gauge to measure the oil pressure of the combustion engine.

2. Digital tachometer in rpm.

3. Thermometer to measure the temperature of the refrigerant liquid.

4. Totalizer of operation hours of the combustion engine.

5. Manual control of speed.

6. Selector switch with indication “Manual – Off - Automatic”.


7. Emergency switch to shut down the combustion engine in case of emergency. The
emergency switch should be type panic button.

8. The control panel should have a memory that logs and shows in a display, the last
25 failure reports at least.

9. The control panel should include a PLC (programmable logic controller) that
processes the signals from the installed instruments in the combustion engine, in
the speed reducer gearbox and in the pump. The PLC should be able to activate
the output signals and indications of the control panel.

10. The manufacturer should wire all signals from the pumping assembly to the control
panel. The wiring should meet the National Electric Code (NEC) standard.

11. The control panel should be grounding according to NFPA 70 standard, so that the
adequate connectors should be supplied, as appropriate.

12. It is desirable, as far as possible, that all indicators in the control panel be written in
Spanish language to facilitate the operator’s interpretation.

13. All instruments, alarms, terminals, wires, etc. should be clearly labeled with
engraved metal plates.

Additional specs:
1. The manufacturer should have experience in the construction of similar equipment.
The manufactures should have at least 10 years of experience in construction and
design of this equipment.

2. The manufactures should submit all the technical information about the pump. Way
of operation, data sheet completely full, dimensions, weight, material, type of
mechanical seal, maximum pressure that it resists, operation curves (pressure vs
differential pressure and speed, flow rate vs differential pressure and speed for
different ranges of viscosity) , description of the cooling system of the mechanical
seal, consume of steam for pump heating, shape of the relief valve and discharge
flow, description of bearings, suction and discharge diameters, NPSHr, efficiency,
operation speed and speed range, etc.

3. All the materials of the pump should be according to the technical specs and the
pumped products. All the materials of the pump should meet the API 610 Standard
or the API 676 Standard as applicable. The API certification should be submitted
with the offer.

4. The equipment should be delivered ready to be installed. The motor-pump


assembly should be aligned by laser, except in the cases that the manufacturer
recommends an alignment in site. All the lubrication plans should have the needed
sensors and needed accessories to operate. All the sensors, accessories, pipes of
the lubrication plan should be installed in the same baseplate of the motor-pump
assembly. All the sensors, accessories, pipes of the cooling system for the
refrigerant should be installed in the same baseplate of the motor-pump assembly.

Quality control for acceptation of the equipment:


1. A confirmation report of the executed proofs according to the API 610 and API 676
Standards should be submitted.

2. Information plate with flow rate, pressures, THD, NPSH, temperature, among
others important data.

3. 2 copies of the following aspects for each pump should be submitted: drawings,
data sheets, operation curves, materials, installation and operation manual (the
manuals preferably in Spanish). 2 copies of the following aspects for each
mechanic seal should be submitted: specs, materials, operation conditions. The
copies should be submitted printed and digital.

4. A list of spare parts for 2 years of uninterrupted operation with their costs should be
submitted.

5. The pump and its drive elements (motor), should be coupled, balanced and
installed in a common baseplate in order to ensure the alignment of motor- speed
reducer – pump.

6. The equipment should be painted and packed so that it is protected against any
damage as consequence of the travel. Hit equipment won't be accepted.

7. The pumps will operate in the outdoors, so that they should be saline environment
resistant and relative humidity higher than 90% resistant. In addition, the pumps
should have a metallic plate that indicates the technical data of the pump and the
name of the pump. The equipment should be tropicalized.
