Light pen scan display
The most powerful desktop computer
produced by Hewlett-Packard now
includes a version, designated System
45C, incorporating a colour raster-
scan display with a light pen. The
additional facilities are compatible
with earlier systems. The system has
a stable colour convergence system to
ensure clarity across the display
screen. Nearly 5 000 colour shades
can be produced, enabling a wide
range of computer graphics problems
to be addressed.

Kits for crts
A range of kits for 20mm crt displays
has been introduced by Thorn Brimar.
The basic three module version intended
primarily for data display includes a
high bandwidtl~ video amplifier. The
addition of a dynamic focus module
improves the capability for high
density display. Another optional
module, important for cctv appli-
cations, provides black level clamp
and flyback blanking. This can be
used with or without the dynamic
focus module. The flexibility of the
synchronization method is maintained
by providing facilities for either com-
posite or separate inputs.
The range of crts and packages for
military applications include spot
injection, head-down, head-up, and
helmet mounted displays. Sizes range
from 600 mm to 25 mm. In the

smaller sizes, tubes are normally
supplied as a package comprising
crt, coils, shield and mounting facility.

Award for Icd work
The recipient of the 1981 David Sarnoff
Award is Professor Cyril Hilsum of the
RSRE. The award, sponsored by RCA
and given by the Institute of Electrical
and Electronics Engineers/was made
to Professor Hilsum for his work in
the displays and semiconductor fields.
In particular, Cyril Hilsum has pionee-
red UK work in liquid crystal displays,

making the country's technology in the
area comparable with that in the US
and Japan. The Hull University and
RSRE research programme continues

I n e r t i a l navigation
A digital, inertial navigation and attack
system from Ferranti is used to evalu-
ate the serviceability of cockpit dis-
play. The FIN 1064, as it is known,
also interfaces with all the weapon-
aiming and navigational equipment in
the RAF's Jaguars, including their
laser rangers. Similar units are made for
the Tornado, Harrier, Nimrod and
Mitsubishi F1 aircraft.
The unit is intended to replace the
Jaguar's Navwass equipment. It has
improved performance over the older
systems; pre-flight alignment times
have been reduced, and weapon-
aiming and navigational accuracy
improved. This is due to the 64
kbyte computer memory -
claimed to be considerably larger than
earlier memories - which allows more
mission profile and fault investigation
data to be stored.
Ergonomic improvements also charac-
terize the FIN 1064. The unit is
cockpit-mounted so the pilot can
operate it easily while he observes a
target. The navigation and directional
data are shown on a head-up display.
