DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

TASK 26-21-39-870-801-A01
1. Description and Operation of the Portable Halon-Fire-Extinguisher

A. Description
The portable halon fire extinguishers have an aluminum cylinder, a pressure
gauge, and a valve assembly. Fire extinguishers 466040 and 466090 also have
a hose assembly. Fire extinguisher 898052 has only a nozzle assembly. The
hand-operated valve assembly, pressure gauge, hose, and nozzle are installed
on the top of the cylinder as shown in Figure 1. A pull-out pin and a pull-tite seal
prevent the fire extinguisher from being operated accidentally.
The fire extinguisher cylinder is filled with a liquid fire-extinguishing agent, Halon
1211 (Bromochlorodifluoromethane [CBrClF2)]. The cylinder is pressurized with
nitrogen (N2). The valve assembly is attached to the cylinder neck. The pressure
gauge is attached to the valve body, and continuously monitors the pressure
inside the cylinder. The valve body gives a method to connect a recharge line to
the fire extinguisher as well as to discharge the extinguishing agent. The hose
assembly, or nozzle, as applicable, are attached to the valve assembly.
A heavy-duty mounting bracket is required when the portable fire extinguisher
is installed in an aircraft, boat, or other movable vehicle. This mounting bracket
is not supplied with the fire extinguisher. It must be purchased separately. See
Leading Particulars for the correct mounting bracket.

B. Operation
The fire extinguisher is pressurized with nitrogen to get the force that is necessary
to push the extinguishing agent from the cylinder. The extinguishing agent and
the nitrogen are kept in the cylinder by the valve assembly until the lever is
manually operated.
When the lever is pushed down, the valve stem assembly inside the valve body
is also pushed down. The nitrogen forces the extinguishing agent through the
siphon tube, around the stem assembly, through the valve assembly, and hose or
nozzle assembly.

NOTE: You must weigh the complete fire extinguisher. A complete fire extinguisher
includes the pull-out pin, pull-tite seal, hose assembly with hose strap, or
nozzle, as applicable.

(b) Put the fire extinguisher on the scale. Record the weight.
(c) Remove the fire extinguisher from the scale.
(d) Compare the weight you recorded in step (b) to the initial weight. If the
weights are the same, the fire extinguisher does not leak.

NOTE: If the last weight is not marked on the cylinder, use the weight limits in
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION, Leading Particulars, to determine the
allowable weight.

(e) If the weight recorded in step (b) is less than 0.125 lb (0.057 kg) of the initial
weight, the fire extinguisher has a leak. You must disassemble and repair
the fire extinguisher (Ref. DISASSEMBLY, Disassembly of the Portable
Fire Extinguisher and REPAIR, Repair of the Portable Fire Extinguisher).
(f) After you weigh the fire extinguisher, Kidde Aerospace recommends you
write the weight on a the locally-approved label attached to the surface

VALVE. THIS VALVE WILL AUTOMATICALLY OPERATE IF TOO
MUCH PRESSURE IS APPLIED TO THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER.
IF THE VALVE OPERATES, IMMEDIATELY CLOSE ALL
SUPPLY VALVES, FIND AND CORRECT THE CAUSE OF THE
HIGH PRESSURE BEFORE YOU CONTINUE TO FILL THE
FIRE EXTINGUISHER.

(4) Close recharge stand valve C and the nitrogen-cylinder supply-valve

when the pressure meter shows the correct pressure.
(5) Look at the pressure gauge on the fire extinguisher. If the gauge does
not show the correct pressure when compared to the pressure meter,
you must remove the extinguishing agent and replace the pressure
gauge (Ref. Disassembly of the Portable Fire Extinguisher).
(d) Open recharge stand valve D to remove the pressure from the stand
and hoses.
(e) After the line pressure is removed, remove the recharge adapter from

CYLINDER CAN BREAK AND CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS
AND DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.

(a) You can lift and touch fire extinguishers at ambient temperatures of 0°F to
+100°F (-18°C to +38°C).
(b) Keep the filled fire extinguishers in a clean, dry area at an ambient
temperature of 0°F to +100°F (-18°C to +38°C).

NOTE: Before you use them, you must do a hydrostatic test of filled fire extinguishers
kept for more than 12 years.

(c) Carefully examine the fire extinguishers and the cardboard boxes before
you move or put them on each other.

NOTE: Unless total information is available that is applicable to ambient storage

temperatures, persons must touch the fire extinguishers as if they were
kept at high temperatures.

(d) Keep the filled fire extinguisher in a clean and dry area. The fire
extinguishers must be kept in an applicable sealed cardboard box so the
fire extinguisher will not be open to humidity, dust, or other unwanted
materials. Keep the filled fire extinguishers in an area with the temperature

(1) The Illustrated Parts List (IPL) gives illustrations and a breakdown, in
disassembly sequence, of all assemblies that can be disassembled, repaired
or replaced, and reassembled.
(2) When equipment designators are used in schematics and wiring diagrams
for electrical and electronic parts, they are shown in the illustrations and the
detailed parts list. They are also included in an Equipment Designator Index.
(3) When the detailed parts list is more than 5 pages, a Numerical Index is
included in this section.
(4) Supplier (vendor) information includes the name, address, CAGE code,
website address (if known) for each supplier.

B. Explanation and Usage

(1) The IPL FIG. & ITEM NO. column shows the figure and item number for each
part. Each part is identified by an item number. A part that is not illustrated will
have a dash (-) before the item number.
(2) Alpha variants, letters A through Z (but not I and O), are used with an item
number to show:
(a) Configuration differences
(b) Alternative parts
(c) Optional parts
(d) Service bulletin changes
(3) The PART NUMBER column shows the part number for each part. The true
part number will be given in the NOMENCLATURE column when:
(a) The part number contains characters that are not permitted by ATA 2000
Specification: for example, a slash (/).
(b) The part number has more than 15 characters.
(c) The part number contains a dash (-) between a number and a letter.
(4) The AIRLINE PART NO. column is a blank column with space for 11
characters. The airline customer can use this space to record their stock
numbers.
(5) The NOMENCLATURE column gives this type of information about the part:
(a) The indenture level shows how the part is related to the next-higher
assembly. For example:

Assembly
• Detail Parts for Assembly
• Subassembly
• Attaching Parts for Subassembly
• • Detail Parts for the Subassembly
• • Sub-subassembly
• • Attaching Parts for Sub-subassembly
• • • Detail Parts for the Sub-subassembly
(b) The full name of the part as shown on the drawing title.
(c) The true part number if not given in the part number column.
(d) ESDS designation, if the electronic part is electrostatic discharge sensitive.

(e) The values and tolerances permitted for electrical and electronic parts,
such as resistors and capacitors.
(f) The CAGE code for parts made by other vendors; for standard parts (AN,
MS, or NAS), no CAGE code is given.
(g) Applicable service bulletins; PRE SB XXXX shows the initial configuration
and POST SB XXXX identifies assemblies and parts after the service
bulletin has been completed. If a service bulletin is related to an
Airworthiness Directive (AD), then the AD number is identified as AD
XXXX.
(h) Interchangeability data (how the parts relate to each other). A list of the
terms, abbreviations, and definitions is shown below in Paragraph C.
(6) The EFF CODE column is used to show limited interchangeability only. It
identifies different configuration in each figure and shows how parts relate to
item 1 (or an alpha variant of item 1) in that figure only. A code letter A through
Z (but not I and O) identifies each configuration. The same code is used in
this figure to show all parts for a specified configuration. A blank space shows
that the part is used on all configurations in that figure.
(7) The UNITS PER ASSEMBLY column gives the quantity of the specified
item number used on one next-higher assembly, subassembly, or
sub-subassembly. The letters AR (as required) are for bulk items, and RF
indicates that the item is shown for reference only.
C. Interchangeability Terms, Abbreviations, Definitions

Term Abbreviation Definition

Alternate ALT The part agrees with all functional and structural
specifications, but the external dimensions,
connection installation and/or mounting provisions
are different. Rework or possible changes can be
necessary.
Optional OPT The part is fully interchangeable in form, fit, and
function with other item numbers as shown.
Preferred PRFD The part is preferred over the other optional parts
shown
Replaced REPLD BY The part is replaced and is two-way interchangeable
By with the item number shown (old part number
can replace either old or new part number when
removed).
Replaces REPLS The part replaces and is two-way interchangeable
