Error Analysis & Multiplication

Grade: 5
Standard:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.5
Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
Guiding Question: To what extent does error analysis instruction yield higher conceptual understanding of
multi digit multiplication?
Objective: Students will be able to identify the computational errors in multi digit multiplication.
Anticipatory Set: Why is it important that we make mistakes?
Introductory Set:

 As a class, on the document camera, we will complete 3x2 multiplication problems using the standard
algorithm and reference of MZMA.
 I will then show the same problem again, except I will make a mistake.
 As a class, discuss the mistake, why the mistake was made, and how we can correctly solve the
problem.
Error Analysis:

 Students will be presented with three error analysis problems with varying mistakes.
 Students will be assigned a role at the start of the task to facilitate the learning.
 Students with teacher facilitation will identify the error, explain the mistake, and correctly solve the
problem.
 Series will be repeated two more times.
Conclusion: Why is it important that we make mistakes? “a second look”
Exit Ticket: Students will identify if a problem was solved correctly or not, and choose the category that the
student misunderstood.
