Pop s3 Lesson Plan
Grade: 5
Standard:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.5
Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
Guiding Question: To what extent does error analysis instruction yield higher conceptual understanding of
multi digit multiplication?
Objective: Students will be able to identify the computational errors in multi digit multiplication.
Anticipatory Set: Why is it important that we make mistakes?
Introductory Set:
As a class, on the document camera, we will complete 3x2 multiplication problems using the standard
algorithm and reference of MZMA.
I will then show the same problem again, except I will make a mistake.
As a class, discuss the mistake, why the mistake was made, and how we can correctly solve the
problem.
Error Analysis:
Students will be presented with three error analysis problems with varying mistakes.
Students will be assigned a role at the start of the task to facilitate the learning.
Students with teacher facilitation will identify the error, explain the mistake, and correctly solve the
problem.
Series will be repeated two more times.
Conclusion: Why is it important that we make mistakes? “a second look”
Exit Ticket: Students will identify if a problem was solved correctly or not, and choose the category that the
student misunderstood.
