How to Handout:
1st, 2nd, and 3rd Person
___

What’s the difference?

The first person point of view is typically used in narrative writing, wherein the storyteller uses
terms like “I” and “We” to integrate themself into the story. The second person point of view
refers directly to the audience, using terms like “You” and “Your.” The third person point of
view is omniscient and does not directly include the narrator or the audience, but rather uses
terms like “She” or “Himself.”

Where should I use it?

First person is most common, and acceptable in narrative writing where one is telling a personal
story from their own point of view. Second person is a bit trickier, however it can also be used in
narrative writing and the usage of it in academic writing is at the discretion of the professor.
Third person is most common, and actively encouraged in academic writing as it separates the
author from the content which increases reliability and ethics of the paper.
