Cybercrime is a criminal activity that target people using computer, computer network, and a network
device. The person involved in this crime are mostly cybercriminal or hackers who want to make money.
They can either be in group or individual. According to Statista, on the year 2019, region seven in the
Philippines was the highest rate of cybercrime incidents, these people has been a victim of fraud using
text or SMS that amounting approximately 1.4 million victims. On the other hand, the Philippine
National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP ACG) stated that during the year 2013-2015, there a 1,211
cybercrime complaints that were filed on them. These complaints are the following: online scams (366),
online libel (240), online threats (129), identity theft (127), and photo and video voyeurism (89).

In today’s modern world, social media platform has a big impact on everyone’s life. We can admit that
technology really makes the life of a person easier. With this, things or tasks will not be hard for them
anymore because with just one click, they can search anything. But on the other hand, as the technology
becomes more innovative, lots of disadvantages will also evident in those social media platforms. As
stated above, many people were scammed or victims of cybercrime activity. The first on the list is online
scams. Online scams have different types, these are phishing, fake antivirus, social media scams, and
mobile scams. The main purpose of this scam is to get money from their victims or credit cards and can
also a way of stealing login and password credentials of the victim. The most common online scam that
happened nowadays are those food deliveries such as Food Panda, Grab, and etc. On ABS CBN news, 10
food delivery riders were scammed in Las Pinas on September, 16, 2020. The cybercriminal hides his/her
identity under the name of “AJ Pande,” the food delivery riders stated that he has a different phone
number and when the riders arrived at the given place, they received the text from” AJ Pande” saying
that it is just a scam. This are just common online scams that happened in today’s generation. Other
common online scams are also evident in buying things, specifically, buying gadgets.

The second in the list is the online libel. Libel is a kind of defamation that show pictures, in any social
media platforms that expose a person to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill
opinion of a person which are not true. Most online libel today is the fake news. Some people create
websites that contains fake news or edited articles in which it aims to make people believed in their
published article. This can also be a way for those people behind online to earn money on the pages in
which fake news was created. Other instances deal about politics and celebrities, for example, a person
will create a fake identity or a dummy account to bash the government and celebrity. It is like when a
cybercriminal is not agree on other people’s opinion, he/she will create something that will make a
person he/she hates embarrassed on the public. The third is the online threats. Online threat is a kind of
attack either to scare people or the cybercriminal has really a motive to hurt or kill the victim. Online
threat is common on celebrities, politicians, and those people who gets trending on social media
platforms, trending in a way that they did something bad to someone. Most online threats that a victim
received are threatening his life, family, or any person related with him/her. This is also a way for
cybercriminal to get money from their victims because as I’ve said it can only just be to scare people so
that they can earn or gain money from them.

The fourth is the identity theft. Those first three complaints mentioned above are related with the
identity theft. Identity theft is a way for the cybercriminals to hide their identity so they create fake
accounts or use other person’s name or faces. One of the reason why the cyberbullying in the
Philippines keeps on increasing is because of the identity theft. As of now, it is hard for the authority to
catch those persons behind these cybercrimes because they are hiding their identity. And it is for those
cybercriminals to delete or deactivate their account and make a new one. The last one is photo and
video voyeurism which means practice of gaining sexual pleasure from watching others naked or
engaged in sexual activity. Most common victims in this cybercrime criminal are teens. Now, that we are
in the new normal, and the classes are executed through the use of online platforms. Many students are
struggling because they don’t have enough means to sustain the needs for their online classes especially
when it comes to gadgets. As I’m browsing my Facebook account, I see compiled posts of students
selling their naked photos or videos in order to get money so they can enroll or will not left behind in the
online class. Other example is, parents used their children to earn money and their customers are
foreign people. This are just some instances that happened in our country, and it saddens me that these
people or victims are experiencing those kind of situation at a young age.

The world becomes more modernized as well as the technology and as an individual who are using
social media platforms, we should be careful on what we are clicking online. We should always identify
whether those news, articles, or things are true or it is just kind of scam or fake news. We must validate
first the information that we read and see online before reacting to any of it. We should keep in our
mind that they are million users of those social media platform and half of it are not true and just hiding
their identity. If we noticed or witnessed this cybercrime activity, reporting the account of the identity
theft will be a big help to the victim.
