First conditional
We use the first conditional when we talk about real and possible situations.

 I’ll go shopping on the way home if I have time. / if I have time, I’ll go shopping on the
way home
 I’ll try a new dance if you teach me. /

IMPORTANT: In first conditional sentences, the structure is usually if + present simple and will +


infinitive. It’s not important which clause comes first.

MODAL VERB “Would”


Would is an auxiliary verb - a modal auxiliary verb. We use would mainly to:
 talk about the past / talk about the future in the past / express the conditional mood
We also use would for other functions, such as:
 expressing desire, polite requests and questions, opinion or hope, wish and regret
Structure of would
The basic structure for would is:

  subject Auxiliary would not Main verb base

HOPE, WISH:
 I would go to Brazil, but I don’t have enough money saved.
 I would like to study German because I have some relatives in that beautiful country.
