the types of speech styles based on the situations given.

What’s in?
We have already discussed about Intimate and Casual speech styles
and you learned the difference of the two.
Remember that every person has his/her own style of communication. We
communicate with others for many reasons – to get or give information, catch
attention, persuade or make people believe you, or express our feelings or
ideas/opinions.
For the next activity, you are going to explore and meet people in different
situations. What will you say to them?
Activity 2: Write your dialogue when you happened to meet these people.
1. You met your former school teacher at a restaurant. What will you tell him or
her?

What’s New?
Let’s start our new lesson!
Read and analyze conversations below. Identify the situation according to the
statements or dialogues of the speaker.
Angeline: Good morning! I would like to open a savings account. What’s the
process?
Bank representative: Sure ma’am! Did you bring with you at least 2 valid ID’s and a
1x1 size picture ma’am?
Angeline: I have brought with me the ID’s but I don’t have 1x1 size picture sir.
Bank representative: Okay ma’am! You may start filling up these forms. While we
process this ma’am, you may take a picture on the studio next to this office.
Angeline: I got it sir. Thank you!
3. Did this conversation used the consultative speech style? Why or why not?
5
What’s in it?
We all know that communication takes place wherever we are and whatever
we do. That’s why, the way we communicate conveys a great impact on how we get
along with people and on how we want to get the things we want.
According to Martin Joos, speech styles is a form of language used by a
person to emphasize the degree of formality. That’s why Martin Joos identified the
styles into Formal, Casual/conversational, frozen, consultative, and intimate.
We have already discussed on casual and intimate. This time, we will
study about the other types – Conversational, Consultative, and Frozen
1. Conversational/Casual – this conversation is typically used in conversation
between friends, groups, and insiders who have something to share with, but
do not have close relations.
Examples: phone calls, text messages, chats with friends, every day
conversation with someone you know.
2. Consultative - This speech style is used in a semi-formal conversation. The
speaker does not usually plan what he/she wants to say. This style requires a
feedback because it is used to ask information, clarifications, or requests.
6

Now you know it! You are ready for more activities.
Activity 1
