Pre-Assessment Unit
Pre-Assessment Unit
The teacher candidate administered a pre-assessment for math on November 6th, 2020.
When assessing the students, it was known that many is a weak area form many. Student 1
struggles to count beyond the number five in English and his native language. Student 2 tends to
lose focus and struggle with simple addition and subtraction. Both students benefit from strong
guidance and support within small to one on one groups. For this preassessment students were
provided an assignment on google classroom. This assignment called for students to answer 5
questions that assessed their knowledge of even and odd numbers along with arithmetic patterns.
The questions were multiple choice and required simple one letter responses using the keyboard.
Students were instructed to use office hours if they needed support reading the questions.
The assessment provided data indicating that a single student was able to complete the
pre-assessment with an 80% while all others scored a 60% or less. Student 1 that has been being
closely observed turned in a blank document. Student 2 completed all questions with only one
correct answer. This data proved that the students are unaware of how to identify even and odd
numbers as well as arithmetic patterns. Due to the ability for students to type responses many
students chose to leave questions blank or respond with “I don’t know” in through a typed
answer. No student chose to use office hours for reading guidance on this preassessment. One
student provided examples to support her answers however these examples followed to be
incorrect as well as her answers. Following this data, the lesson will strengthen student
knowledge of even and odd number identification and arithmetic patterns when multiplying.
