1 Scope and Application


This specification details requirements for the manufacture of measuring gauges and
templates for use in track installation and maintenance in RailCorp.

The gauges and templates include:

• Rail Gap gauge


• Versine rule
• Rail Wear Reporting gauge
• Switch tip profile gauge
• Housed points gauge
• Rail Gap Dial Calculator

AS 1442 – Carbon Steels – manganese steels – hot rolled bars and semi finished
products.

AS 1734 – Aluminium and aluminium alloys – flat sheet, coiled sheet and plate.

AS 2837 – Wrought alloy steels – stainless steel bars and semi finished products.

3 Rail Gap Gauge


This section details the manufacturing specification for Rail gap gauges.

3.1 Material
The gauge shall be manufactured from Steel to AS 1442.

3.2 Dimensions
The dimensions of the gap gauge and the location of markings shall be as detailed in
Figure 1. All dimensions are in millimetres

3.3 Inscriptions
All lines and numerals shall be inscribed on the gauge and shall be no more than 0.2mm
thick.

4 Versine Rule
This section details the manufacturing specification for Versine Rules.

4.1 Material
The rule shall be manufactured from Aluminium to AS 1734.

4.2 Dimensions
The dimensions of the versine rule and the location of markings shall be as detailed in
Figure 2.

5 Rail Wear Reporting Gauge


This section details the manufacturing specification for Rail Wear Reporting Gauges.

5.1 Material
The gauges shall be manufactured from 1.5mm Stainless Steel Plate to AS 2837.

5.2 Dimensions
The dimensions of the Rail Wear Reporting Gauge and the location of markings shall be
as detailed in Figure 3 for the 47/50 gauge, Figure 4 for the 53kg gauge and Figure 5 for
the 60kg gauge.

Tolerances on all dimensions shall be ± 0.1mm

6 Rail Wear Angle Reporting Gauge


This section details the manufacturing specification for Rail Wear Angle Reporting
Gauges.

6.1 Material
The gauges shall be manufactured from 1.5mm Stainless Steel Plate to AS 2837.

6.2 Dimensions
The dimensions of the Rail Wear Angle Reporting Gauge and the location of markings
shall be as detailed in Figure 6.

7 Switch Tip Profile Gauge


This section details the manufacturing specification for Switch Tip Profile Gauges.

7.1 Material
The gauge shall be manufactured from 1.5mm Stainless Steel Plate to AS 2837

7.2 Dimensions
The dimensions of the Switch Tip Profile Gauge and the location of markings shall be as
detailed in Figure 7.

8 Housed Points Gauge


This section details the manufacturing specification for Housed Points Gauges.

8.1 Material
The gauge shall be manufactured from Steel 3mm thick to AS 1442

8.2 Dimensions
The dimensions of the Housed Points Gauges and the location of markings shall be as
detailed in Figure 8.

9 Rail Gap Dial Calculator


This section details the manufacturing specification for Rail Gap Dial Calculators.

9.1 Material
The calculator dial shall be manufactured from Aluminium sheet 2mm thick to AS 1734.

The cursor shall be manufactured from 1mm clear perspex

9.2 Dimensions
The dimensions of the Rail Gap Dial Calculator and the location of markings shall be as
detailed in Figure 8.

10 Crossing Nose and Wing Profile Gauges


This section details the manufacturing specification for crossing nose and wing profile
gauges.

10.1 Material
The gauges dial shall be manufactured from 2.5 - 3mm thick stainless steel plate grade
302 AS 1449.

10.2 Dimensions
The dimensions of the nose and wing profile gauges and the location of markings shall be
as detailed in Figure 10 and Figure 11.

The co-ordinates of the profiles are detailed in Table 1, for the crossing nose gauge, and
Table 2 for the crossing wing gauge.

Tolerances on all dimensions ± 0.1mm

10.3 Marking
Gauges shall be inscribed as shown in 5 mm block letters with figures one side only.
