ABSTRACT

This work is the result of a practical work carryout at MERITS SARL for a peroid of two months
in the defense of a Higher Nation al Diploma
Why MERITS?
The choice of the enterprise was to answer was to exercise some activities in relation with the
consistent studies, in order to discover the realities of the enterprise, to acquire the necessary
expertise, on the other hand to increase my professional faculties and to charge me an
entrepreneur’s psychology profile on the other hand.
This report which is the practical exercise and documents defining the need as constraints imposed
to serve the maintenance of a Cocking Board.

Le stage effectue dans les services techniques de MERITS SARL nous a permit de vivre une
expérience professionnelle tout en prenant conscience des problemes de livraison tardive auquel
ils sont confronte. La resolution d’une partie de ces problemesreside sur l’elaboration d’une etude
d’avant usinage.
Tout au long de notre stage, nous avons etudié les possibilites de realisation de cette etude.
Pour parvenir a nos fins nous avons procèdéen premier place par une etude du dessin de definition

GENERAL INTRODUCTION
1.1) BACKGROUND OF STUDY
In the fulfillment of the requirement of the award of the higher national diploma, students are
obliged to carryout intensive research and practice execution within a time period of two
months maximum [internship].

Mechanical fabrication which is my specialty, this requirement which includes the


establishment must have at least three quarter of the requirement necessary. To fulfill as a
result of my attachment with [ MERITS SARL ]
1.2) PROBLEM STATEMENT
During the period of internship in MERITS SARL, a company name AFRI PHARMA which
deals with the Production of Drugs. Brought a part of one of their mechanical system that had
failed, for the maintenance of this system, the name of this part is ‘’cocking board’’ which
capture my attention due to its role play on it.
1.3) OBJECTIVE OF STUDY
Before going for this internship, the intern had the following goals objective to be achieved at
the end.

.To be able to set the lathe machine, and so far use it to carryout different operations such as
turning, threading, boring, taper turning.
.To be able to make schematic sketch and dimension parts that are to be manufacture.
.To master the readings of most measuring instrument such as venier calipers depth gauges
.To know how to use the arc and oxy-acetylene welding machine.
.To know how to carryout basics maintenance on the lathe, grinding, milling, and cutting
machine.

1.4) RESEARCH QUESTION:


The most important question that the intern ask, and had wish to know after the theoretical
study to the seeing in the practical field, was the setup of the milling machine on the various
angles, to carryout different milling operation, how to setup the gear cutting using dividing
head, and calculation obtain theoretically to the machine, how to setup the spindle, feed,
speed, on both the milling and lathe machine, how to setup the lathe, milling, machine to
obtain conical surfaces.

1.5) DEFINITION OF KEY TERMS USED:

 ARIF MECAN SARL : ‘Artelier des fabrication des pievemecanique et construction des


charpentremetalliques’
 FACING: it is an operation carried out to reduce the length of the work piece.

 TURNING: it is an operation carried out to reduce the diameter of a piece.

 BORING: It is an internal machining operation where by a single point cutting is used to


enlarge hole.

 KEYSLOT: it is a groove cut into a shaft, sprocket, gear and pulley for the mounting of
key.

 SARL:privatelimitedcompany.

 HINGES: are door supports.

 RUDDEER: Are direction control devices on ships and vessels.

PRESENTATION OF THE ENTERPRISE


2.1) HISTORICAL BACKGROUN OF THE ORGANIZATION AND PLAN
The company MERITS SARL was created in 2005, with a startup capital of
3,000,000million by MR. BOINA JONAS , who is the Director General exerting (dealing)
in the domain of manufacturing mechanics, industrial welding, and industrial maintenance.
it’s first objective is to fabricate in command for the local market and to meet up to the time
to execute a job. It is situated in Cameroon Douala Bonaberi at entree MOORE PARAGON,

2.3) PRODUCTS AND SERVICES OF THE ORGANIZATION.


MERITS SARL: is a mechanical manufacturing and maintenance Company situated in
Cameroon Douala at BEPANDA , the various products and services of this organization are:
PRODUCTS: twist locks, shafts, washers, force screw, stud, screws, nuts, cylinders, piston,
etc.
SERVICES: controlling and maintenance of industrial mechanism such as motor pumps,
ship engine, fly wheels, refrigerating system.

CHAPTER TWO
INTERNSHIP ACTIVITIES
2..1) ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT DURING INTERNSHIP.

WEEK ONE: FROM 10/06/2016 to / 11/06/2016.


During the first week of the internship, the intern was introduce to the organization and
workers of the company. Safety rules and precaution was taught to the intern, by the
company agent different machine tool where been shown how to operate. The various rules
and regulation was being given to the intern, observation of worker working on the various
type of machines and later on taking part in the cleaning of the workshop, these activities
was necessary in order to prevent unecessary accident which occurs.

WEEK TWO:
Lectures on the different types of machines and how they operate, different operational
techniques on facing, threading, boring, straight turning, grooving and taper turning operation
as use on the lathe, and how to grind lathe tool, the centralization of the tool using the tail-
stock on the lathe. The manufacturing space bar using a lathe and milling machine,
Participating in the fabrication of a clamp,
Mode of production: welding of the clamp frame, manufacturing of it shaft turning,
grooving, threading of the clamp shaft and drilling of holes on the clamp
Measuring equipment: A VERTNIER CALIPER .
A THREAD GAUGE.
Manufacturing of a shaft consisting of different operation which are turning, threading,
chamfering and key way cutting. Manufacturing of a pressure screw. Maintenance of a knee
cap “CARDANE”. Internal threading of a cylinder pipe of diameter 50mm and length 50mm,
which is to be connected on a tank, for valve “VAN” to be connected to it so as to let water,
oil or petrol out of a tank .
Maintenance of a cement mixer, which had failure on the gear transmitting motion to the pot,
the internal diameter of the gear had worn out , causing the shaft to rotate without the gear, a
bushing of the same diameter of the gear turn to have a good concentricity with the bushing
and shaft. The bushing was then force fitted ion the gear, it was then weld on the two ends,
Machined to have a good surface finished, and cutting of the key way on the milling machine.

WEEK THREE:
Maintenance of a machine that grinds plastics (buckets, rubber chairs, etc) and replacement
of its three(03) teeths that were damage on the machine. The teeths were been manufacture
through milling operation , drilling and threading of a hole on the machine that were already
worn out where those teeths are to be replace firmly on the machine . A hole of M10.5X1.5
and a screw of M12X1.5 .Measuring instrument vernier caliper and a thread gauge.
Participating on the repaires on a key way of a motor shaft for a construction company and
that on the pulley and do the mounting .
Manufacturing of a turbine shaft.
Mode of production of the shaft turning, chamfering, grooving, threading, drilling and
production of a key way on the shaft.

WEEK FOUR:
Participating in the fabrication of “ROULLETTES” that’s guide the rotation of a rolling gate
(03 pieces).
Mode of production: Turning, grooving, drilling, booring and production of a key way on a
shaping machine.
Maintenance of a moule that produce pots by ALLUBASSA , surfacing of the moule using a
special attachment on the lathe with a grinding wheel and using special instrument to control
the anmount of roughness average .

WEEK FIVE:
Participating in the fabrication on a “POINSON” through milling operation and a thermic
heat treatment process was been carried out in order to harden the external core of the
material by SCTM GAZ Douala.
Maintenance of a center lathe machine and replacement of a sleeve and a bearing that was
damage in the machine . the sleeve bearing was been manufacture and replace with bronze
and the bearing was bought in the market witjh its standard designation as require on the
bearing , which was causing the machine to vibrate most especially on the level of the chuck
of the machine which the fault was diagnos and solve with some maintenance personelle
team .

Week six:
Participating in the manufacturing of a “ROYANAIRE SHAFT” for ALLUBASSA.
Mode production: Turning of the shaft 5to it required dimensions, shamfering, threading,
milling and drilling operation.

Manufacturing of a fly wheel “bridge “having a cover from “CAMRAIL “.Manufacturing of


a flat washers and hinges, the manufacturing of a rudder consisting of various operations
making out, cutting using oxy acetylene turning drilling and welding.

WEEK SEVEN:
Manufacturing of several twist locks consisting of different operations: turning, Grooving,
Chamfering, Drilling, Threading and Center drilling. With a conical head of 53 degrees, Its
mounted on crane and trailer trucks. A command from a TRANSITALIA SARL company
DOUALA see appendix1
Manufacturing of a refrigerating machine which was worn out, this pump is use to extract
salty water (brine) from the sea into a tank in the ship which is further transform to cooking
salt in the lab this shaft is made of stainless steel.
Maintenance of refrigerating machine which is used to produce ice and sends to fishing
companies off-shore. The replacement of the conveyor.

WEEK EIGHT:
Manufacturing of a pulley 02 pieces with the help of a lathe machine and production of of
the key way on the pulley with the help of a shaping machine.
Participating in the fabrication of plaques 200pieces, mode of production cutting and
drilling.

2.2) BENEFITS DERIVED FROM INTENSHIP.


During this period of internship, the intend came across and discovered many techniques on
the practical field. The intend had the opportunity to see how gear cutting and hexagon, etc.
are realize on the milling machine. How left and right external and internal threats are been
manufactured, how the top slide is use to obtain a cone, how turning can be done when the
tool is position downward to the machine bed and the sense is reverse, how an ice making
refrigeration system operates and how to verify if it is working perfectly. How to mount
pieces of different shapes on the four jaw chuck.

CHAPTER THREE

. 3.3) PROBLEMS OR DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED DURING THE


INTERSHIP.
The biggest problems encountered by the intern before and after the internship were:

 Difficulty in finding the place to the internship.


 Difficulty on the language used in the company.
 Insecurity and working over time.
 Power failure which causes time delay, slowing down the production.

SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS
4.1) ORGANIZATIONAL STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESS:
STRENGTHS:
During this period of internship in ARIF MECAN SARL, what really impress and made
me happy was then good equipped workshop and Accurate machines of the company, skillful
machinist, constant availability of work, and the opportunity the company give to the intern
to work and operate the various machines. The motivation within and at the end of the
internship.Also encouraged the intern.
WEAKNESS:
During this period of internship in ARIF MECAN SARL, the intern realize that many
thinks that was taught in the classroom, was not all applicable during the practical phase for
example; the machine spindle should be stop before any measurement, but technician
measure pieces while the spindle of the machine is still rotating. Welding was done without
goggle, spindle speed are assume without calculation, lack of study and method office

4.1) SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION

4.1.1) SUMMARY

This internship report is the original copy and activities carryout during internship by the
intern in a partial fulfillment of the higher national diploma [HND] in mechanical fabrication,
it consist of five chapters.

 Chapter one talks on the ENTER.


 Chapter two also talks of the activities carried out during the internship.
 Chapter three analysis of the encountered problems qnd the strength and
weaknesses of the enterprise.
 Chapter four further talks on the summary of findings and recommendations

4.1.2) CONCLUSION

An internship is the best way of putting, or discovering some secrete in engineering after the
theoretical phase of study. So as to enhance once practical knowledge to be fit for the job
market, which was objective obtain by the intern.

4.2: RECOMMANDATION AND PROJECTIONS

The various point where recommended by the intern to the company and the school so as to
ameliorate their working conditions.

 That machines should be clean by the end of each working day


 Chip rakes should be use to clean chips or burs on the t-slots on the milling machine.
 Machine spindle should be stop before and measurement takes place so as to avoid
accident.
 Machines should be lubricated by the end of each week.
 That a study, method office should be put in place so as to increase productivity and
economics times.
 AUTO-CAD drawing should be introduced in level one so as to give the student
enough time to master it.
 That the school should go in partnership with company so as to enable the student to
do their internship in good performance company.
 That welding should be done using googols
