EVALUATION TEST 2
I
Reading comprehension language use and vocabulary
I have two hobbies. They are collecting coins and skateboarding. Collecting
coins is my indoor hobby while skateboarding takes me outside to experience
5 the fresh air. I find that they provide a nice balance of going out and staying in
during my free time.
Since I began collecting coins two years ago, I have met many others who
share the same burning interest. It started when my father brought home his
10 unused coins from his business trips. I thought some of them looked exotic.
They looked very different from our Singapore coins. I had a liking for the
various coins immediately and began collecting them. Now, whenever my
father goes on his trips, I beg him to bring home as many different coins as he can.
15 Today, I have over two hundred coins from twenty-four different countries.
My interest in skateboarding began differently. I started three years ago, when I was in
20 primary four, when a classmate of mine introduced skateboarding to me. At first, I found it
difficult to balance on a plank of wood on wheels. I also thought it was silly skateboarding
when rollerblading was so much easier and faster. But after two weeks of skateboarding
every afternoon, I began to love the wind blowing in my hair and the thrill I got going places
with it. Today, my favourite skateboarding area is the park by the beach where it's safe
and I do not bump into people while skating. My two hobbies are important to me because
they help me relax. I don’t want to study too much but I make sure that I do my homework
25 before I even think about my coin collection or skateboarding.

Keys to health
To stay healthy, you need to work on four areas – exercise,
diet, weight control and good health habits.
5 Regular exercise is essential for good health. It tones the
muscles, strengthens the bones, and makes the heart and lungs
work better. Exercise also helps to relieve stress. The most
beneficial type of exercise is aerobics. Aerobic exercises, in the
10 form of jogging, cycling or lap swimming, strengthens the heart.
It is important to choose a form of exercise you enjoy. It could
be dancing or just walking. As long as you do it regularly, you
will be fit. People who are fit enjoy life more because they can join in any
kind of activity.
15 To maintain a healthy life, it is necessary to develop good dietary habits.
Eat a variety of food but specially more whole-wheat grains, apples,
oranges, pears, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower and fish. Decrease intake of
animal protein and fats. Use less salt and take at least 1000 mg of calcium a
20 day. Non-fat milk and low-fat yoghurt are good sources of calcium. Do not
forget to drink at least seven glasses of water a day. Avoid eating junk food
or processed food which is high in sugar or salt content and has little
nutritional value.
Developing good health habits is important if you want to keep healthy. Don't smoke, avoid excessive alcohol
25 intake, and keep moderate hours. Go to bed early and wake up early. Work hard and play hard too. Avoid stress
by exercising and developing hobbies. Have a positive attitude towards people and work. Half-yearly dental
check-ups are also necessary to maintain dental health.
Being overweight can lead to a lot of health problems. You can suffer from heart disease, high blood
30 pressure, varicose veins and gall bladder disease. Weight control requires conscious effort and self-control. Diet
and exercise play the most important role in weight control. Make sure exercise is part of your daily program.
Watch the amount and type of food you eat. Complex carbohydrates are important in a healthy diet.
Health is pleasurable; ill health is miserable. There are other threats to health but if you remember the points
mentioned above, you should enjoy good health.
