SUBJECT : ONLINE WRITESHOP ON THE DEVELOPMENT

OF SELF-DIRECTED AND DIFFERENTIATED LEARNING
ACTIVITY SHEETS IN ENGLISH, SCIENCE, AND
MATHEMATICS FOR 4TH QUARTER

DATE : September 04, 2020

In support to the implementation of the Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan,

the United States Peace Corps in collaboration with the Bureau of Learning Delivery
(BLD)-Teaching and Learning Division shall conduct an eight-day online writeshop
on the development of self-directed and differentiated learning activities to
supplement the home-based learning of elementary learners. This activity will be
conducted on September 09-11 and 14-18, 2020, respectively.

The main goal of the activity is to develop supplementary learning resources that
learners can engage in such as the individualized learning activity sheets that will
give them additional support and opportunities to practice and master the
knowledge and skills they learned from particular lessons. The activity specifically
aims to:

1. capacitate the participants in the development of self-directed and

differentiated learning activities;
2. develop self-directed and differentiated learning activities in English, Math
and Science for Grades 1 to 6 (4th Grading period) aligned with the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs);
3. review, quality assure, and finalize the materials; and
4. print and distribute the learning materials (soft copy and printed copy) to
ROs and SDOs.

Development of Learning Activity Sheets in English, Science,

and Mathematics for 4th Quarter by the Bureau of Learning Delivery
in Partnership with U.S. Peace Corps and USAID

Activity Background

Mr. Ronald Dela Cruz with his laptop and reference materials went to his neighbor early on
August 07, 2020. He wanted to prepare well and be ready to present his outputs in the plenary
session. His neighbor was kind enough to let him use their internet connection as his
connection at home was intermittent. When it was his turn to present, he enthusiastically
shared his outputs for Science where students had to work on activities to improve their
understanding of the concept of “Force.” Mr. Dela Cruz was one of the participants in the
recently concluded online Writeshop on the Development of Self-Directed and Differentiated
Learning Activity Sheets in English, Science, and Mathematics for 3rd Quarter covering
Grades 1 to 6 held on August 05 – 07 and 10 – 14, 2020.

The writeshop was conceptualized in support of the Department of Education’s (DepEd)

Learning Continuity Plan, which laid out DepEd’s plan for the education sector in response
to the Covid-19 pandemic. It aimed primarily to develop independent learning activity sheets
focusing on 3rd quarter learning competencies for Science, Mathematics, and English from
Grades 1 to 6. The activity sheets are supplementary worksheets that will support the
learning modules for students in the public schools.

With the support of USAID (United States Agency for International Development) Small
Project Assistance funds, US Peace Corps, DepEd - International Cooperation Office (DepEd
ICO) and the DepEd - Bureau of Learning Delivery-Teaching and Learning Division (BLD-
TLD) through the Multigrade Program Team, worked cooperatively and productively to
ensure the smooth implementation of the writeshop.

The Opening Program of this 8-day online writeshop was participated in by the DepEd
officials and US Peace representatives including Chief of BLD-TLD, Dr. Rose Villaneza; the
Director of ICO, Dr. Margarita Ballesteros; the Director of BLD, Dr. Leila Areola; and the
Director of Programming and Training of Peace Corps, Ms. Wendy Slee. Likewise, there were
speakers from the Bureau of Curriculum Development (BCD) and the Bureau of Learning
Resources (BLR) who shared with the participants important information about the new
compressed curriculum to be used for this school year called Most Essential Learning
Competencies (MELC) and DepEd’s quality assurance guidelines, especially on matters
related to copyright and intellectual property rights.

The participants who came from different regions of the country were divided into groups and
were assigned to specific learning area and grade level. Each participant developed six
activities focused on developing at least two skills following the MELCs. All throughout the
writeshop, the participants actively worked on developing the learning activity sheets
assigned to them, consistently ensuring that learning and development principles were
properly applied. Moreover, participants were asked to ensure that the activities will be
learner-friendly, especially to the students in far-flung areas and those who have very limited
resources available. The participants remained committed and focused throughout the
workshop – multitasking, staying up late to finish the activity sheets, and working through
their connectivity issues – because they recognize the importance of their output in
supporting students and teachers under this new normal.

The learning activity sheets will go through further review and revision, editing, validation,
and quality assurance to ensure that the students will receive quality learning materials.
Once the learning activity sheets are through with the rigorous evaluation process including
the quality assurance process by the Bureau of Learning Resources of DepEd, they will be
finalized and will be available for use to any public school in the country.

Below are the photo title of the Opening Program and the collage of participants’ photos
during the Closing Program:
Activity Objectives

This activity is a continuation of the above-mentioned writeshop. It will be conducted on

September 09 – 11 and 14 – 18, 2020. It aims to develop additional supplementary learning
resources that learners can engage in such as the individualized learning activity sheets that
will give them additional support and opportunities to practice and master the knowledge
and skills they learned from particular lessons. It specifically aims to:

1. capacitate the participants in the development of self-directed and differentiated

learning activities;
2. develop self-directed and differentiated learning activities in English, Math and
Science for Grades 1 to 6 (4th Grading period) aligned with the Most Essential
Learning Competencies (MELCs);
3. review, quality assure, and finalize the materials; and
4. print and distribute the learning materials (soft copy and printed copy) to ROs and
SDOs.

Methodology

This eight-day online writeshop will be facilitated by the Bureau of Learning Delivery (BLD)
through the Multigrade Program Team of the Teaching and Learning Division (TLD) and US
Peace Corps Team. The Key Officials from BLD-TLD and US Peace Corps will be invited
during the Opening Program to give messages and directions for the writeshop.
To ensure full participation of all invited writers and reviewers, an e-Registration through
Google Forms will be conducted to generate a profile of writeshop participants particularly
contact information that will facilitate efficient coordination between and among writers,
reviewers, and management staff during and after the writeshop.

Participants

The activity is expected to be participated in by the writers who were involved in the 1 st
writehop of developing LAS for 3rd Quarter including regional and division offices
supervisors, district supervisors, principals, school heads and teachers.

Expected Outputs

At the end of the writeshop, it is expected that all participants were able to develop the
Learning Activity Sheets in English, Science, and Mathematics for 4 th Quarter covering
Grades 1 to 6 aligned with the MELCs. Upon the review of the BLR for quality assurance,
the LAS will be finalized. Electronic copies of these materials will be shared to all Schools
Division Offices. In addition, printed copies of the said LAS will also be provided to each
Regional Office.
