Q1: What should Sipho have done differently?

Ans:

Sipho should not have paid bribe to personal assistant as it is completely unethical and unacceptable in
an organization. Rather he must have informed his seniors about the same. If he would have informed
his seniors about this unethical practices being held in their organization. He would have come in good
books of his seniors and his job would also have been saved.

Giving or accepting bribe is completely unethical. Sipho should have taken stand for his personal values
such as honesty and hard work. He should have worked harder to get promotion rather than bribing the
personal assistant.

Q2: In what way could the mine management have provided support to him prior to his wrongful act?

Ans:

Sipho should have to complain about it to the top-level management, instead of giving the bribe. He
should have to complain to the top-level management that the assistant manager is asking for the bribe
of R500.00 for his due promotion. Sipho should have told the management that promotion is his right
which he got it with hard work, efforts, and dedication.

The management should be asked the HR personals who take care of hiring, promotions, and other HR-
related matters in the organization. In another way, the organization should have appointed a
committee that will handle such issues and will prevent such events. The company should take strict
action against the managers who do such activities so that deserve one's can get the promotion, instead
of the people who give bribe to get promotions.

Q3: How would you have acted had you been in a similar situation?

Ans:

The case study highlights the value of honesty and respect that the community upheld to which young
Sipho belonged. Due to his family’s poor condition, he worked at the gold mine in South Africa. The
company treated him well as:

 He was given accommodation in a mining hotel.

 He was rewarded for his work with timely wages.

When the offer of promotion came, Sipho could figure out that something is wrong and the company's
policy has no such procedure. He could have gone and reported this incident to a senior official, but due
to his families poor condition, he fell into the trap of making easy money and gave up his values of
honesty and respect.
As an individual, everybody knows there is no shortcut to success. Schemes that offer easy money are
risky and frauds like these will be discovered sooner or later. Therefore, one should not compromise on
ethics to make more money.

If I was in similar situation:

-keeping on my personal values that included honesty and hard work.

-avoiding corrupt activities, fraud

The truth will appear whatever what we are doing. Therefore, what I do will be in the same line with my
values.
