GENERAL WELDING INSTRUCTIONS
SHALL BE FOLLOWED WHEN WELDING ALL CQMS CAST PRODUCTS
WELDING PROCEDURES • ENSURE CORRECT FIT / SPACING OF PARTS TO BE • PREHEAT BOTH PARTS TO THE RECOMMENDED
WELDED. TEMPERATURE IN TABLE 1. THIS CAN BE DONE
GENERAL GUIDELINES WITH A HEATING TORCH, USING TEMPERATURE-

WELDING CASTINGS TO Q&T PLATE
WELDING PROCEDURES WHEN WELDING Q&T PLATE TO CASTINGS PRECAUTIONS ARE REQUIRED TO ENSURE FREEDOM FROM HYDROGEN
ASSISTED COLD CRACKING (HACC) AND TEMPER BRITTLENESS.
GENERAL GUIDELINES
THESE ARE:
• PREHEAT AND MAXIMUM INTERPASS TEMPERATURES MUST BE ADHERED TO IN ORDER TO PROVIDE A DUCTILE
FITTING INSTRUCTIONS HAZ MICROSTRUCTURE IN THE PARENT MATERIAL.
PDM NO: W-0001-1 REV NO: C SHEET: 2 OF 2 • THE USE OF LOW HYDROGEN WELDING CONSUMABLES (PREFERABLY H4 OR H5) WILL MINIMIZE WELD ZONE
HYDROGEN LEVELS.
Phone: +61 07 3902 3800
Web: www.cqmsrazer.com • HIGH TOUGHNESS, UNDERMATCHING STRENGTH WELDING CONSUMABLES (EG E55, W55) WILL PROVIDE
Fax: +61 07 3902 3891
DUCTILE WELD METAL WHICH WILL REDUCE RESIDUAL STRESSES IN THE JOINT AND WILL RESIST BRITTLE
FRACTURE.
• USE THE PREHEAT AND MAXIMUM INTERPASS TEMPERATURES RECOMMENDED BY THE PLATE
MANUFACTURER. WHERE THESE ARE INCOMPATIBLE WITH THE TEMPERATURES REQUIRED FOR THE CASTING,
IT IS ADVISABLE TO USE BUTTERING LAYERS ON THE SURFACE OF THE CASTING WELD PREPARATION. IN THIS
TABLE 2: WELDING SPECIFICATIONS CASE, THE CASTING IS PREHEATED TO THE RECOMMENDED TEMPERATURE EG. 280̊ C AND TWO LAYERS OF
WELD METAL ARE DEPOSITED.

(°C) (°C) (°C) PLATE MANUFACTURER (EG. 150̊ C). MEANWHILE THE PLATE IS HEATED TO 150̊ C, THE COMPONENTS ARE
ASSEMBLED AND THEN WELDED OUT, OBSERVING THE MAXIMUM INTERPASS TEMPERATURE OF 220̊ C (IN THIS
EXAMPLE) AS RECOMMENDED BY THE PLATE MANUFACTURER. AT THESE TEMPERATURES IT IS ESSENTIAL

THAT WELD METAL IS DEPOSITED ONLY ONTO THE BUTTERING LAYERS AND NOT ON THE CASTING TO
PREVENT HACC CRACKING IN THE CASTING HAZ.

GENERAL PRECAUTIONS
• CRACKS ARE CAUSED BY A) SHRINKAGE STRESS, B) HYDROGEN EMBRITTLEMENT, C)
• DO NOT OVER WELD. EXCESS WELD METAL CAUSES GREATER SHRINKAGE STRESSES. RAPID COOLING AFTER WELDING (ALLOWING UNTEMPERED BRITTLE CONSTITUENTS TO
FORM IN THE HEAT AFFECTED ZONE), OR A COMBINATION OF THE ABOVE.
• ALWAYS USE LOW HYDROGEN ELECTRODES. IRON-POWDER ELECTRODES CAN HELP
REDUCE WELDING TIME AND THE AMOUNT OF METAL AFFECTED BY HEAT, THEREBY • PRE-HEATING, INTERPASS TEMPERATURE, AND POST HEATING AND COOLING RATES ARE
REDUCING STRESSES. VERY IMPORTANT.
• FLAT OR SLIGHTLY CONVEX BEADS TEND TO GIVE MAXIMUM STRENGTH WITH MINIMUM • PREDOMINANTLY CRACKS PROPAGATE FROM ABRUPT GEOMETRIC CHANGES AND
SHRINKAGE STRESSES. SURFACE IMPERFECTIONS. GRIND ALL BLENDS SMOOTH TO A SURFACE FINISH SPECIFIED
ON THE DRAWING
• IF HIGHER STRENGTH IS DESIRED IN THE JOINT, FIRST PASSES SHOULD BE WITH 500MPa
OR 70ksi MINIMUM TENSILE STRENGTH CONSUMABLES. WARNING: ALL PERSONS WELDING AND PERFORMING OTHER MAINTENANCE WORK
SHOULD WEAR OH&S APPROVED SAFETY EQUIPMENT, SUCH AS HARD HATS, SAFETY
SHOES AND GLASSES, WORK GLOVES AND THE PROPER LENSES IN WELDING GEAR.
