Multiplication of Decimals
Lesson 9

LET US KNOW 1
Have you observed the gas pump
during your parents is refilling the
gas tank of your car or
motorcycle? What did you notice
to the liter of the gas? What did
you notice to the price of each
liter filled in the tank? You can
see that the numbers in the liter of
gas and the price is in the decimal
form.

Decimals are useful in situations that need computation involving

everyday quantities. You can understand some situation better,
especially those that involves money, with knowledge of the concept of
decimals.
This chapter you will be given opportunities for practice and
mastery of decimals. You will learn to decimals up to ten thousandths,
do operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of
decimals. Also, you will study the connection between decimal and
fractions.

LET US STUDY

Adding decimals is easy when you keep your work neat

To add decimals, follow these steps:
STEP 1:

2
Write down the numbers, one under the other, with the decimal
points lined up

Example: Add 1.452 to 1.3

Line up the decimal points: 1.452
+ 1.3
STEP 2:

Add extra zeros to the right of the number so that each number has the
same number of digits to the right of the decimal place.

Example: Add 1.452 to 1.3

Add with zeroes: 1.452
+ 1.300

STEP 3:

Add the numbers as you would whole numbers.  Place the decimal
point of the result in line with the other decimal points.

Example: Add 1.452 to 1.3

Add: 1.452
+ 1.300
2.752

To subtract, the follow the same method: line up the decimals, then
subtract
STEP 1:

Write down the numbers, one under the other, with the decimal
points lined up

Example: What is 7.368 to 1.15?

Line up the decimal points: 7.368
− 1.15

3
STEP 2:

Add extra zeros to the right of the number so that each number has the
same number of digits to the right of the decimal place.

Example: What is 7.368 to 1.15?

Add with zeroes: 7.368
− 1.150

STEP 3:

Add the numbers as you would whole numbers.  Place the decimal
point of the result in line with the other decimal points.

Example: What is 7.368 to 1.15?

Subtract: 7.368
− 1.150
6.218
