LEARNING COMPETENCIES
The learner shall be able to:
a) explain how the music of Myanmar, a Southeast Asian country relates to its geography and culture; and
b) demonstrates understanding of common musical characteristics of the region as well as unique
characteristics of a particular Southeast Asian country.; (Dep-Ed MELCs 2020).

Burmese music consists of various folk traditions. The Burmese have a distinct form of music
commonly played at religious festivals called byaw. Burmese sing byaw based on the beat of a long, thin drum
which is at times interrupted by a larger drum beating.
Hsaing waing is the traditional folk music group used in art,
Burmese theatre, festivals and in the nat pwe. This ensemble is believed to
have been influenced by the Ayuthaya drum and gong ensembles brought
by many invasions of the Konbaung Dynasty in the 18 th Century. The group
is composed of 21 differently tuned drums in a circle and gongs similar to
those of other Southeast Asian countries. Hsaing waing music is
characterized by quick changes in texture and timbre and quick shifts in
melody and rhythm. These characteristics make hsaing waing different from typical Southeast Asian music.
Below is a hsaing waing ensemble.
Musical instruments of Myanmar are categorized as concert known as anyient and orchestra which they
call as hsaing-waing .
The sidaw or outdoor musical ensemble performs in royal courts for important ceremonies. Sidaw is
played in festivals. Chamber music ensemble is for indoor performance with a female singer.
Myanmar music has a rich array of folk traditions. It also shows similarities with Chinese and Thai Music. It
also related to many other musical traditions in the region.

The Art of Cambodia
The traditional arts and crafts of Cambodia include ceramics, kitemaking, lacquerware, nontextile
weaving, pottery, silversmithing, stone carving textiles and wrat murals.

Textile Weaving
The two main types of weaving are the ikat technique and the uneven twill.
Nontextile Weaving

Carving and Sculpture
The best stone carving in Cambodia can be found adorning the temples of Angkor.
Silversmithing
From silver items such as betel boxes, ceremonial objects for funerary and religious rituals’ use, coins
and weaponry were produced.
Ceramic/Pottery
Cambodian ceramics were commonly used for domestic purposes such as container for food and water.
The major center for pottery is Kampong Chhnang province.

Kites
It is now very popular in the whole country. Kites flown at night during the
northeast monsoon season. They attached a bow to the kites which resonates in the wind
and produces a musical sound.
Painting
The art of tattooing is also practiced in Cambodia. This serves as body ornamentation, and a way of
clothes replacement.
Architecture
Angkorian architecture focuses mainly on religion. Religious temples and buildings were only
constructed of stone.

THE ART OF MYANMAR


The Burmese, Mon, and Pyu are the ethnic groups with the greatest contribution to the cultivation of
arts and culture of Burma. The Mons were the first to have been influenced by Indian ideas since the group
occupied the coast. They adopted Buddhism and Hinduism, known religions observed by Indians.

Crafts
Myanmar has ten traditional arts called pan se’ myo . These are blacksmith, bronze casting, goldsmith,
lacquerware, masonry, painting, stone carving, stucco relief, turnery and wood carving.

Architecture
Myanmar is known to be “Land of Pagodas.”

The style of Buddha shows an identifying chracteristics. E.g Oval shaped
Buddha of Mandalay.
Dress
Before 20th century Burmese men traditionally wore paso while women wore tamien. Today men and
women wear sarong.

THE ART OF VIETNAM


French art techniques were adopted by the modern artists of Vietnam. The Vietnamese artists combined
the use of traditional mediums such as bronze, ceramics, cloth, lacquer, paper, silk, and stones with the
application of these techniques. Their artworks carried elements of eastern and western blend.
Painting (Skill Painting)
Vietnamese is noted for its silk painting which is one of the most favored artworks in the country. The
painting originated from drawing and painting on rice paper.

As early as third and fourth centuries B.C., Vietnamese artists have crafted art items applying techniques
in using lacquer. Wood serves as a medium for this type of painting. Hot lacquer is used by the artist to draw
this picture outline.

Carving and Sculpture


Woodblocks Prints
Vietnamese woodblock prints are created through the use of design stencils curved in wood.
They use organic materials to make paint which is applied to the design on the woodblock.
Architecture
When Chinese influence dominated in Vietnam, Chinese architecture
greatly influenced the basic structure of Vietnamese building, mostly pagodas
and temples, communal houses, houses of aristocracy and imperial palaces.
It was in the time of the Ly Dynasty when many of Vietnam’s landmark
structures were constructed. Famous of these are the One-pillar pagoda, Quynh Lam
pagoda, and Temple of Literature.

Aerobic exercise is a nonstop, repetitive, vigorous activity that increases breathing and heartbeat rates. It
improves cardiovascular conditioning and overall fitness. The activities or exercises that fall under are
marathon, running, swimming, jogging, biking and aerobics.

Anaerobic exercise- involves great bursts of energy in which the muscles work hard to produce energy. It is
quick or of very high intensity. It includes activities such as gymnastics. Sprinting, weight lifting, sit ups, pull
ups, push ups and others.

T. Type

Frequency- refers to the amount/number of times per week the exercise is performed
Intensity-refers to the amount of effort exerted in a workout.
Time- it is just a measure of the amount of time you will spend exercising.
Type -refers to the type of exercise to be done, such as aerobics, dancing, jogging, swimming, walking or
weight training.
Terms associated with Good Nutrition
Metabolism- pertains to all chemical reactions that happen in the body.
Basal Metabolic Rate- refers to the amount of energy needed to keep your body functioning normally when at
rest.
Energy Balance Equation- is the relationship between the energy consumed – measured in calories and
the energy expended – also measured in calories.

TEAM SPORTS
Team Sports are games played between teams composed of a minimum of three players and more.
Sepak Takraw- The name sepak takraw was taken from the words “sepak (kick) and takraw (ball)”.
It was called sepak jarring in 1945 because of a net that called jarring. It was originally played by the Malays
during the 12th century when it was still called sepak raga. Sepak Takraw as a game sport in the Philippines was
introduced in Tuguegarao, Cagayan in 1981.

The Players
Sepak Takraw is played in a court. A team, also called regu is composed of
three members each with positions like the tekong who puts the ball in the
play, apit kiri (left inside) who stays on the left side. Apit kanan who stays
at the right side.

Preliminary Activity
I. Introduction
Man’s attitude behaviors and practices are the results of the different factors in the
environment. These factors that influence one’s attitudes, behavior and practices related
to sexuality are family, school, church, mass media, friends and community. These shape
man’s personality and his or her sexual attitudes and behavior.
INPUT!
Factors that affect one’s attitudes and Practices related to Sexuality:
Family- Home or family plays an important role in a teenager’s life. Parents need to establish open
communication with their children about their sexuality. It is best if parents can come to the terms with
their children’s sexuality and they should show their trust and give them advise or help they need.
School- in school they received education or correct information about sexuality, family life, sexually
transmitted disease. The school and teachers influence the sexuality of the individual through teaching
of sex roles, responsible parenthood and other concepts related to sexuality.
Church/Religion- The church and other places of worship help the parents and the school in developing
moral values among teenagers. Your church and religion help you develop moral values regarding sex
through spiritual teaching and counselling.
Mass Media- have a very strong influence on the development of man’s sexual attitudes and
behaviors. Teenagers should learn to critically analyze good sources of information particularly on
sexuality.
Friends/ Peer Group-Friends cam help increase enjoyment of life. The presence of friends can ward of
feelings of loneliness, depression and low moods. Teenagers should know whom to trust and go with to
avoid any wrong doing that may result to sexuality-related problems.
Community- Another factor that greatly influences the development of sexual attitudes and behaviors is
the community to where one belongs. The moral standards set by the community help each member to
develop wholesome attitudes and behaviors about sexuality.

Importance of Sexuality
In the family, it is important that parents start teaching children about sexuality. From infancy. The way
parents verbally and physically treat the infant contributes to early sexuality education. There are other parent-
child activities that may have healthy or unhealthy influence on one’s sexuality such as:
 Toilet training
 Use or lack of use of terminologies for body parts and certain physical activities.
 The way parents regard the status and roles of men and women
 How parent treat and value one another.
 The way parents handle children’s questions about topics related to sexuality.
