IV. ASSESSMENT
A. Multiple Choice.
Direction: Encircle the letter of the correct answer.
1. When the correlation coefficient, r, is close to one _________.
a. there is no relationship between the two variables
b. there is a strong linear relationship between the two variables
c. it is impossible to tell if there is a relationship between the two variables.
d. the slope of the regression line will be close to one.
2. Given the following data pairs (x, y), find the regression equation.
(1, 1.24), (2, 5.23), (3, 7.24), (4, 7.60), (5, 9.97), (6, 14.31), (7, 13.99), (8, 14.88), (9,
18.04), (10, 20.70)
a. y = 0.490x – 0.053
b. y = 2.04x
c. y = 1.98x + 0.436
d. y = 0.49x
3. Using the data from no. 2, calculate the correlation coefficient. a. r = 0.490
b. r = 0.985
c. r = 0.971
d. r = 0.240
4. Using the data from no. 2, obtain a prediction for x = 4.5.
a. 2.15 b. 2.21 c. 9.18 d. 9.34
B. Perform as directed.
1. It is hypothesized that there are fluctuations in norepinephrine (NE) levels which
accompany fluctuations in affect with bipolar affective disorder (manic-depressive
illness). Thus, during depressive states, NE levels drop; during manic states, NE levels
increase. To test this relationship, researchers measured the level of NE by
measuring the metabolite 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenyglycol (MHPG in micro gram
per 24 hour) in the patient’s urine experiencing varying levels of mania/ depression.
Increased levels of MHPG are correlated with increased metabolism (thus higher
levels) of central nervous system NE. Levels of mania/ depression were also
recorded on a scale with a low score indicating increased mania and a high score
increased depression. The data is provided below.

3. A sample of 6 persons was selected the value of their age ( x variable) and their
weight is demonstrated in the following table. Find the regression equation and
what the predicted weight is when age is 8.5 years.
Serial no. 1 2 3 4 5 6
Age (x) 7 6 8 5 6 9
Weight (y) 12 8 12 10 11 13

Σ𝑦 2 =682
= The regression y=178.22+(16.82) x. at the age of 8.5 years the predicted weight
is (16.82) y+-178.22+16.82=161.4
