EXPERIMENT 1/EXPERIMENT 2:

Aim/objective:

The aim of this experiment is to study the circuit description of the RF-section (tuner section) and to
study the RF-section through test points and measure the voltages at each test points for different
channels.

Introduction:

The signal from the antenna or the cable is connected to the tuner, which consists of an RF amplifier,
mixer, and local oscillator. The tuner is used to select the TV channel to be viewed and to convert the
picture and sound carriers plus their modulation to an intermediate frequency (IF). As in most super
heterodyne receivers, the local-oscillator frequency is set higher than the incoming signal by the IF
value. Most TV set tuners are prepackaged in sealed and shielded enclosures. They are two tuners in
one, one for the VHF signals and another for the UHF signals. The VHF tuner usually uses low-noise FETs
for the RF amplifier and the mixer. UHF tuners use a diode mixer with no RF amplifier or a GaAs FET RF
amplifier and mixer. Today most modern tuners are a single integrated circuit.

Procedure:

- The television monitor was mounted onto the base unit

- The antenna cable was connected to the base unit
- Then one end of the 26 pin flat cable was connected to the base unit and the other endo to the
monitor
- Then one end of the 8 pin octal cable was connected to the base unit and the other end
connected to the monitor
- Then one end of the 11 pin octal cable was connected to the base unit and the other end
connected to the monitor
- The AC mains as connected to the monitor
- While tuning the television The voltages for VLF, VHF and UHF was measured at TP21 and
recorded in the results
- While changing the channel the change in voltage for each channel was measured at TP19
and recorded in the results
- While tuning the television The voltages for VLF, VHF and UHF was measured at TP18 and
recorded in the results
- The automatic gain control was measured at TP20 and measured in the results
- While tuning the television the VHF voltage was measured at TP 17 and recorded in the results
- While tuning the tv the automatic fine tuning voltage was measured at TP16 and recorded in the
results
- The horizontal output section voltage was measured at TP14 and recorded in the results
- The tuner output signal was measured on the oscilloscope at TP15 and recorded in the results
Results:

1. TP21 BLUE: VLF= 2.05mV

VHF= 2.50mV

UHF= 10.8V

2.

Channel voltage
0 2.11V
1 4.50V
2 7.69V
3 6.9V
4 7.65V
5 3.75V
6 4.20V
7 5.68V
8 6.2V
9 4V
3. VLF= 2.3mV, VHF=10.8mV, UHF= 3mV
4. 6.63V
5. VHF=2.73Mv :VHF was not supplying 10.8V as expected
6. While tuning the voltage is fluctuating for 5.9V to 6.10V
7. 11.19V

Conclusion:

To conclude this two lab experiments had discussed the functions of the components in the TV and we
learnt how these components work and what they actually do and we successfully measured the
voltages at each of the required test points while tuning the TV in VLF, VHF and UHF mode
