PART B.

DESCRIPTIVE QUESTIONS. ANSWERS THESE QUESTIONS ON THE ANSWER SHEET PROVIDED FOR
PART B. BE SURE TO PUT YOUR NAME AND ROLL NUMBER ON THE ANSWER SHEET. EACH OF
THE DESCRIPTIVE QUESTIONS IS WORTH SIX MARKS. NEITHER THIS PAPER NOR THE BLUE
BOOKLETS WILL BE CHECKED.

1. Consider the function f : R → R defined by

f (x) = x2sin(x)
Find f ′(0) using the limit definition of the derivative. You must use the limit
definition of the derivative and no other formula to answer this question.

Answer:

x2sin(x) − 02sin(0) x2sin(x)

f ′(0) = lim = lim = lim x sin (x) = 0 · 0 = 0
x→0 x−0 x→0 x x→0

Topics: Limit defn of derivative

2. Consider the function f : R → R defined by

−x , x < 0
f (x) =
0 , x>0
Is the function f continuous at x = 0? Justify your answer.

Answer:

6
The function is defined at 0, f (0) = 0

The limit of the function exists at 0,

lim f (x) = lim − x = −0 = 0

x→0 − x→0 −

lim f (x) = lim 0 = 0

x→0+ x→0+

The direction limits exist and agree so the regular limit is also 0.

The limit at 0 and the function value at 0 are the same.

We have checked all the necessary conditions and so f is continuous at 0.

Topics: continuity

3. Show that the equation x101 + x57 = 0 has a solution on the interval [−1, 1].

Answer: Consider f (x) = x101 + x57 defined on the closed interval [−1, 1]. This is a
polynomial function and so is continuous on the closed interval. Thus it has the
intermediate value property, and f will take all values between f (−1) = −2 and
f (+1) = 2 on the interval. In particular, it will take the value 0 at some point
on the interval. Thus the equation has a solution somewhere on the interval.

Topics: continuity, intermediate value property/theorem.

4. Consider the function f : R → R defined by

f (x) = 3x + 7
Give a formal ε − δ proof that

lim f (x) = 13
x→2
Solution:

Note that |3x + 7 − 13| = |3x − 6| = |3| ·|x − 2| = 3|x − 2|

Then for all ε > 0, there is a δ = ε/3 such that

0 < |x − 2| < δ = ǫ/3 implies that |(3x + 7) − 13| = 3|x − 2| < 3δ = ε

Topics: formal limits

5. Suppose that a particle moves along the ellipse whose equation is given

4x2 + 6y 2 = 10
At time t = 5, x = 1, y = 1, and dy/dt = 2. What is dx/dt when t = 5?

Solution:

Differentiating wrt t
8x · dx/dt + 12y · dy/dt = 0
At t = 5, we have

7
8 · 1 · dx/dt + 12 · 1 · 2 = 0

8dx/dt + 24 = 0
dx/dt = −24/8 = −3

Topics: implicit differentiation, related rates
