TYPES OF NUTS, BOLTS & STUDS.METHOD OF REMOVING BROKEN STUDS, METHOD OF FREEING NUTS AND BOLTS

AIM:

To study about bolts and nuts types

HEX:

A six sided nut also referred to as a finished hex nut.

WING:

A nut wings for hand tightening.

FLANGE:

A Nut with a built in washer like flange.

SLOTTED:

Slotted nuts are used in conjunction with a washer pin on drilled shank fasteners to
prevent loosening

CASTLE:

Castle nuts are used in conjunction with a cotter pin on drilled shank fasteners to prevent
loosening.

SCREWS:

Screws with a smooth shank and tapered point for use in wood (abb-ws)

MACHINE SCREW:

Screw with threads for use with a nuts or tapered holes (abb-ms)

THREAD CUTTING MACHINE SCREWS:

Machine screws with a thread cutting (self-tapping) point

SOCKET SCREWS:

Socket screws, also known as Allen head as fasteners with a hex allen wrench.

EYE BOLT:

A bolt with a circular ring on the head end used for attaching a rope or chain.

J-BOLT:

J shaped bolt are used for tied owns or as an open eye bolts.

U -BOLTS:

Bolts in U – shaped for attaching to pipe or other round surfaces, also available with a square
bend.

HEAD STYLES:
FLAT:

A counter shank head with a flat top(abbreviated FH)

OVAL:

A counter shank head with a surrounded top (abbreviated -OH or OV)

ROUND:

A domed head (abbreviated -RH)

HEX:

A hexagonal head (abbreviated- HH or HX)

DRIVE TYPE:

PHILLIPS AND FREARSON:

An X-shaped drive (abbreviated -PH)

SLOTTED:

A slot in the head (abbreviated -SL)

COMBINATION:

A combination of slotted and Phillips drives (abbreviated -combo)

SOCKET HEX OR ALLEN:

An hexagonal hole for use with allen wrench

WASHERS TYPE:

FLAT:

A flat washer is used to distribute load available in SAE, USS of other patterns.

FINISHING:

A washer used to obtain a finished look usually used with oval head screw.

OGEE:

Thick layers diameter, cast iron, washer with a curved appearance. Typically used in clock and
wood construction.

REMOVAL OF BROKEN STUDS:

METHOD 1:

1. Drill a hole smaller diameter into the broken stud.


2. Cut internal threads by using taps(the internal thread should be left hand, if broken stud is a right handed
thread and vice versa).
3. Insert a bolt of the correct size and threading and as you screw the bolt, the stud will get extracted.
4. Insert we can make use of stud extractor.

METHOD 2:

1. Place a bolt with head on top of the broken studs and weld it taking care not to deposit on the welding
material on to the threaded part of the hole.
2. By applying a wrench over the bolt head, the stud can be extracted.

RESULT:

The types of nuts and bolts are learned.
