Dog missing in
stolen truck
Trixie, the white Chow/lab cross,
was waiting patiently in the vehicle
while her master, Neil Menard, took in
the Cents game last Saturday evening.
But when the game ended, Neil
found that his vehicle had been stolen
from the parking lot adjacent the arena
— and Trixie gone, too.
Neil has been trying to get word out
about Trixie’s disappearance. “Whoever
stole the truck might not have know at
first that she was there. She usually
sleeps on her blanket in the back seat.”
said Neil. He very anxious to get her
back. “I’m not so worried about the
truck, but I want to get my dog back.”
If anyone has any info about Trixie,

a 1994 Chev Z71 4x4, license plate A50 606.

Sharon McIvor, is one of 11 University
of Victoria graduates who will be recog-

Distinguished Alumni Awards this
evening, in Victoria. Sharon received her
LLB in 1986, and has gone on to become a
legal scholar and activist. A member of
the Lower Nicola Indian Band, she is an
Indigenous activist and academic who
writes and speaks on women’s rights in
the context of Aboriginal self-govern-
ment. In McIvor v. Canada, she success-
fully challenged discriminatory provi-
sions of the Indian Act, forcing the feder-
al government to amend the act (the
“McIvor” amendments). She is an
instructor of Indigenous studies at NVIT.
BC Hydro setback
Lack of First Nations consultation
BC Hydro's most significant transmis-
sion project in 30 years, the proposed
$700 million dollar transmission line from
Merritt to the Lower Mainland, was dealt
another setback this week when the BC
Utilities Commission ruled that First
Nations had not been sufficiently consult-
ed. After a year long review of BC
Hydro's engagement of First Nations, the
BCUC ruled that BC Hydro had failed to
meet the high level of consultation owed
to several First Nations who will be seri-
