3 proceed to our discussion.

4 SFX: TIC TOC

5 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN UNDER

6 RADIO TEACHER: The previous activity gave us the idea that we

7 can factor polynomials by finding the common factors. I think

8 we are now all geared up to finally proceed to the discussion of

9 our topic. As I have said earlier, our new lesson is Factoring

10 Polynomials. Oh yes! Are you ready to roll?

14 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN UNDER

15 RADIO TEACHER: The whole discussion will be revolving around the different

16 types of factoring polynomials and its steps. First in our list is –

17 Factoring Polynomials with Greatest Common Monomial Factor

18 or G-C-M-F. What is G-C-M-F?

19 SFX: ML LAUNCH ATTACK

20 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN UNDER

21 RADIO TEACHER: Greatest Common Monomial Factor or G-C-M-F is the

22 highest possible value of a number, a variable, or a

23 combination of numbers and variables which is common in

24 each term of a given polynomial. We are going to use the

1 formula: ax plus bx plus cx equals x multiplied by the sum of

2 a, b and c (AX + BX + CX = X(A + B + C)). Got it? (PAUSE)

3 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN UNDER

4 RADIO TEACHER: Here are the steps in factoring polynomials with G-C-M-F:

5 Number 1, Find the greatest common monomial factor.

6 Number 2 Divide each term in the polynomial by its

7 G-C-M-F. Number 3, Combine the answers in Steps 1 and

8 Step 2 as a product. Let us take a look at this example:

9 (SFX: ML FIRST BLOOD)

10 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN UNDER

11 RADIO TEACHER: Factor six x plus four x squared (6X + 4X2).

12 SFX: ML YOU HAVE BEEN SLAINED

13 RADIO TEACHER: To factor this, first, find the greatest common monomial factor.

14 For the given terms, the G-C-M-F is two x (2X). Then, divide six

15 x plus four x squared by its G-C-M-F. Get the first term which

16 is six x divided by two x, that is equal to three, get the second

17 term which is four x squared and divide it by two x and you

18 will get two x as a result, copy the operation which is addition,

19 then combine the results: two x is the G-C-M-F, enclose three

20 plus two x in a parenthesis and you will get two x multiplied by

21 the sum of three and two x (2X(3 + 2X))

22 SFX: ML WIPED OUT

23 RADIO TEACHER: Did you understand? (PAUSE) That’s terrific! At this moment,

24 you will be given a chance to apply the steps in factoring

2 challenge!

3 SFX: YOU CAN DO IT!

4 RADIO TEACHER: Have your turn to factor the given terms. You can proceed in

5 answering the activity after our radio episode.

6 SFX: YAY!

7 RADIO TEACHER: You write it down for now and be sure to give your best later!

8 Here are the terms: Please try factoring the following:

9 Number 1, twelve a squared plus eighteen a (12A2 + 18A),

10 number 2 is ten x squared plus twenty-five x squared plus five

11 (10X2 + 25X + 5), and number 3, x to the fourth power and y

12 cubed minus eight x y squared plus x squared y

13 (X4Y3– 8XY2 + 12X2Y)

14 SFX: YOU CAN DO IT!

15 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN UNDER

16 RADIO TEACHER: Let us now proceed to the next: Factoring Polynomials with

17 Difference of Two Squares:

18 SFX: LAUNCH ATTACK

19 RADIO TEACHER: What do we mean when we say factors of difference of two

20 squares? (PAUSE) The factors of difference of two squares is

21 the product of two binomials which is the sum and

22 difference of its square root of each term. Given the formula:

23 a squared minus b squared equals the product of the sum of

24 a and b and the difference of a and b (A2 − B2 = (A + B)(A − B))

1 SFX: ML SAVAGE
2 RADIO TEACHER: Follow the steps in finding its factors: First, take the square roots

3 of the two terms. Then, write the product of the sum and

4 difference of the square roots. That’s it! You got the answer!

5 Easy, right?

6 SFX: OH YES!

7 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN UNDER

8 RADIO TEACHER: For you to be able to fully understand, let us take a look at

9 at this example. Factor x squared minus four y squared

10 (X2 – 4Y2) using the difference of two squares method. Your

11 first step is to take the square roots of the two terms. The

12 square root of x squared is x, while the square of four y

13 squared is two y. After this, we are going to write the

14 product of the sum and difference of the square roots.

15 Adding first, that is x plus two y, then subtracting, we have x

16 minus two y. Putting it side by side and enclosed in a

17 parenthesis, we will get the product of the sum of x and

18 two y, and the difference of x and two y (X + 2Y)(X – 2Y)

19 SFX: ML VICTORY!

20 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN UNDER

2 RADIO TEACHER: Yes, you are right! We are going to apply what you have

3 learned right away! (PAUSE) factor the following terms and let

4 us see how well you will follow the presented steps. Add this

5 activity from the previous one and we will check your answers

6 on our next episode! So here are the terms, factor the following:

7 Number 1, x squared minus y squared (X2 – Y2), number 2, x

8 squared minus one hundred twenty-one y squared (X2 – 121Y2),

9 and number 3, twenty-five x squared minus one hundred forty-

14 RADIO TEACHER: I always believe in the saying that progress is a continuing

15 process, so for us to achieve progress, let us continue with

16 our lesson.

17 SFX: OVERJOYED LAUGH

18 RADIO TEACHER: Next in line is factoring polynomials with sum and difference of

19 two cubes. We are going to divide this topic into two: the sum of

20 two cubes and the difference of two cubes. A polynomial in

21 the form a cubed plus b cubed (A3 + B3) is called the sum of

22 two cubes. A polynomial in the form a cubed minus b cubed

23 (A3 – B3) is called the difference of two cubes.

24 SFX: OOHH

1 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN UNDER

2 RADIO TEACHER: Let us familiarize ourselves first with factoring of

3 polynomials with sum of two cubes.

4 SFX: CLAP

5 RADIO TEACHER: Here are the steps: First Take the cube roots of the two terms.

6 Second, write the sum of the two cube roots as the first factor.

7 Third, for the second factor, get the trinomial factor by: (a)

8 squaring the first term of the first factor, (b) subtracting the

9 product of the first and second terms of the first factor, and (c)

10 Squaring the last term of the first factor. Lastly, write the

11 product of the first and second factors.

12 SFX: AHOO, AHOO

13 RADIO TEACHER: To fully understand the method, let us factor x cubed plus sixty-

14 Four (X3 + 64). Look at how it is done in your handout. First,

15 take the cube roots of the two terms: the cube root of x cubed is

16 x, while the cube root of sixty-four is 4. Next, write the sum of

17 the two cube roots as the first factor, so we will have x plus 4.

18 Then, for the second factor, get the trinomial factor by:

19 squaring the first term of the first factor, that x times x is x

20 squared. Subtract the product of the first and second terms of

21 the first factor which will be negative four x. Square the last

22 term of the first factor, which is four, so we get sixteen.

23 Voila! We get x squared minus four x plus sixteen. The last

24 step is the easiest. We just have to write the product of the

1 first and second factors side by side, enclosed in

2 parentheses. Therefore, the factor of x cubed plus sixty-four

3 is the product of x plus 4 and x squared minus four x plus

5 SFX: ML VICTORY!

6 RADIO TEACHER: That is a fun challenge, right?

7 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN UNDER:

8 RADIO TEACHER: Here is the twin challenge!

9 SFX: OH NO

10 RADIO TEACHER: Well, warriors never quit! Let us have the steps in factoring

11 polynomials with difference of cubes. First, take the cube roots

12 of the two terms. Second, write the difference of the two cube

13 roots as the first factor. Third, for the second factor, get the

14 trinomial factor by: (a) squaring the first term of the first factor,

15 (b) adding the product of the first and second terms of the first

16 factor, and (c) squaring the last term of the first factor. Lastly,

17 write the product of the first and second factors. To picture

18 these steps, let us factor eight x cubed minus twenty-seven

19 (8X3 – 27). Following the steps: take the cube roots of the two

20 terms, the cube root of eight x cubed is two x, while the cube

21 root if twenty-seven is three. Next, write the difference of

22 the two cube roots as the first factor, we will get two x

23 minus three. Then, for the second factor, get the trinomial

24 factor by: squaring the first term of the first factor, that is

Factoring Polynomials 101010

1 two x times two x is x four x squared, adding the product of

2 the first and second terms of the first factor, two x times

3 three is equal to six x, and squaring the last term of the first

4 factor, we have three times three equals nine. Finally, write

5 the product of the first and second factors, therefore, the

6 factors of eight x cubed minus twenty-seven is two x minus

7 three and four x squared plus six x plus 9
