7 excited as you are! But, before that, let us first have a review of

8 our previous topic. We have tackled the first three in Factoring

9 Polynomials, first, with Greatest Common Monomial Factor or

10 G-C-M-F, second, with Difference of Two Squares, and lastly,

11 with Sum and Difference of Two Cubes!

12 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN UNDER

13 RADIO TEACHER: Today, we will be dealing about factoring with perfect

14 square trinomials and general trinomials!

6 (XY (X3Y – 8Y + 12X))

7 SFX: OH MEN!

8 RADIO TEACHER: Next, let us have factoring the difference of two squares: for

9 number one, x plus y is multiplied by x minus y (X + Y)(X – Y)

10 (PAUSE), number 2 is x plus eleven y times x minus eleven y

11 (X + 11Y)(X – 11Y) (PAUSE), and number 3, five x plus twelve

12 multiplied by five x minus twelve (5X + 12)(5X – 12)

13 SFX: SO EASY.

14 RADIO TEACHER: Then, let us have the answers from you quiz the last time: for

15 number 1, x minus four times x cubed plus four x y plus sixteen

1 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN UNDER

2 RADIO TEACHER: Let us start with factoring polynomials with perfect square

3 trinomials.

4 SFX: FIRST BLOOD

5 RADIO TEACHER: What does it look like when we say perfect square trinomial?

6 (PAUSE) Perfect square trinomial is the result of squaring a

7 binomial. A perfect square trinomial has first and last terms

8 which are perfect squares and a middle term which is twice the

9 product of the square root of the first and last terms.

10 SFX: INTERESTTING

11 RADIO TEACHER: To factor perfect square trinomials, we will follow these two

12 steps: first, get the square root of the first and last terms, and

13 then list down the square root as sum or difference of two terms.

14 SFX: AWESOME!

15 RADIO TEACHER: Let us this for an example: factor four x squared minus four x

16 plus one. (4X2 – 4X + 1). Let us square the root of the first term,

17 four x squared is two x. Then, the square root of the last term

18 one is one. Therefore, its factors are two x minus one and two x

19 minus if placed side by side or the square of two x minus one.

20 SFX: YOU HAVE SLAINED AN ENEMY

21 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN UNDER

22 RADIO TEACHER: Did you get it? (PAUSE) Very good! Now, will you try factoring

23 the following. (PAUSE) Yes, it is very easy and you may answer

24 it later after the episode.

-MORE-

Factoring Polynomials 666

1 SFX: YAY!)

2 RADIO TEACHER: Here are the terms. Please write it down. Factor the following:

3 Number 1, x squared minus two x plus one (X2 – 2X + 1).

4 (PAUSE) Number 2, x squared minus twenty x plus one

5 Hundred (X2 – 20X + 100). (PAUSE) Number 3, nine x squared

6 plus twelve x plus four (9X2 + 12X + 4) (PAUSE) Got it?

7 SFX: YOU CAN DO IT!

8 RADIO TEACHER: Let us proceed to another twin: general trinomials.

9 SFX: OH NO)

10 RADIO TEACHER: Yes! There are two ways to factor general trinomials. Let us

11 study first how factoring general trinomials in the form: a x

12 squared plus two plus b x (AX2 + BX + C) whose leading

13 coefficient a is 1 being factored. First, list all the possible factors

14 of c. After that, find the factors of c whose sum is equal to

15 constant b. Then, express the binomial factors of the trinomial.

16 SFX: DOUBLE KILL

17 RADIO TEACHER: Take a look at this example: Factor x squared plus five x plus six

18 (X2 + 5X + 6). Our first step is to list all possible factors of c

19 which is 6. We have 1 and 6, -1 and -6, 3 and 2, and -3 and -2

20 After listing, find the factors of 6 whose sum is equal to b which

21 is 5. Among the listed factors, positive 3 and positive 2 best suits

22 5 as sum. We can now express it as binomial factors x plus three

23 and x plus 2.

24 SFX: ML LEGENDARY

-MORE-

Factoring Polynomials 777

1 RADIO TEACHER; Another example is finding the factor of x squared minus three x

2 minus ten (X2 – 3X – 10). We get to list all the possible factors of

3 negative ten (-10). We got 1 and -10, -1 and 10, 5 and -2, -5 and 2.

4 Among these factors, find the factor of 6 whose sum is 5,

5 therefore, we have -5 and 2. Express the binomial factors of the

6 trinomial: x minus five multiplied by x plus two (X − 5) (X + 2)

7 Thus, the factors of x squared minus three x minus ten is equal

8 to x minus 5 multiplied by x plus 2 (X2 – 3X − 10 = (𝑥 − 5) (𝑥 + 2)

9 SFX: OH YES!

10 BIZ MSC UP AND THEN UNDER

11 RADIO TEACHER: Isn’t this amazing, dear learners?

12 SFX: CLAPPING

13 RADIO TEACHER: Now, let us study more how general trinomial is factored when

14 the leading coefficient a is greater than 1 through inspection by

15 trial and error. Here are the steps: first, list all the possible factors

16 of first and last terms. Second, determine the middle term by trial

17 and error using the possible factors in the first step. Lastly,

18 determine the factors of the general trinomial based on the

19 answer in the second step.

20 SFX: TRIPLE KILL

21 RADIO TEACHER; Let us then factor two x squared plus seven x plus five.

22 (2X2 + 7X + 5). Following the presented steps, first, list all the

23 possible factors of 2 and 5. For 2x we have x and 2x, while for 5,

24 we have 1 and 5, and –1 and -5. After this, determine the middle

-MORE-

1 term by trial and error using the factors enlisted, determine the

2 sum of the product of the outer terms and the product of the

3 inner terms, from there, we will be able to find out the factors for

4 the trinomial which is x plus one and two x plus five.

5 SFX: ML MANIAC

6 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN UNDER

7 RADIO TEACHER: Alright! That is a sweet, sweet ride to the depths of factoring!

8 Let us spice up the air and factor some more!

9 SFX: OH YES!

10 RADIO TEACHER: Factor the given terms and let us check your answers on our next

11 episode. Number 1, x squared plus seven x plus twelve

12 (X2 + 7X + 12) (PAUSE) Number 2, x squared minus two x minus

13 fifteen (X2 – 2X – 15) (PAUSE) and number 3, twelve x squared

14 minus twenty-nine x plus fifteen (12X2 – 29X + 15)

15 SFX: SAVAGE

16 RADIO TEACHER: Whoa! We have tackled all five condition in factoring

17 polynomials, guys! But that does not end here. We are still up

18 for another challenge!

19 SFX: OH NO!

20 RADIO TEACHER; Do not worry, this is your favorite type of challenge, the \
