The Current Approach of Atrial Fibrillation Management

SUMMARY
This review article is entitled “The Current Approach of Atrial Fibrillation Management”
authored by Anish Amin, Assel Houmsse, Abiodun Isheela, Jaret Tyler, and Mahmoud Houmsse.
In clinical practice, the most commonly encountered arrhythmia is atrial fibrillation (AF). Aging
populations, along with increased outcomes for many chronic medical conditions, have led to
rises in AF diagnoses. AF is often considered to be associated with an elevated risk of adverse
effects such as acute ischemic attack, ischemic stroke, systemic embolism, and death. This
association is reinforced in select populations with preexisting comorbid conditions such as
chronic heart disease. The purpose of this review is to highlight the advancements in cardiology
in AF treatment in both acute and long-term conditions. Moreover, it will also discuss the
development of anticoagulation therapy in recent years and pioneering research in the
development of novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs), reversal agents for new NOACs, role of
implantable recorder in AF management and nonpharmacological options to anticoagulation
therapy.

CRITIQUE
The article is articulately written, reading this article has equipped me with knowledge,
skills, and attitude on how to properly manage patient with Atrial Fibrillation. One of the strengths
of this article is that the authors have presented comprehensive basic concepts of Atrial
Fibrillation, such as its pathophysiology, acute management, and long term management of atrial
patient which are essential for nurses to understand in order to provide optimal care for patient
with Atrial Fibrillation. Furthermore, it is also well-detailed in terms of showing us the possible
outcomes, contraindications, and complications when this treatment such as Ablation therapy is
done. It was great that they had added some statistics data, and graphs in which evaluate the
strength of clinical evidence and which also efficiently present the results thus, making the readers
thoroughly understand the information of data gathered. One the other hand, one of the
weaknesses of this study is that the article is written in English language only. As a consequence,
it will not be understandable among other countries that also encounter patient with Atrial
Fibrillation in which they use their local language.
SIGNIFICANCE/IMPLICATION TO NURSING

For all nurses and nursing students, this article is significantly important because of the
fact that whether it's a regular routine or on crises, nurses are constantly on the forefront and are
responsible for delivering holistic care for all kinds of patients. In spite of the fact that nurses are
the backbone of health professionals, they have a significant role to play in healthcare systems.
As a future nurse, this article has equipped me with knowledge, skills, and attitude on how to
handle and manage patient with Atrial Fibrillation.

In the diagnosis of Atrial Fibrillation, nurses have an important function and responsibility
as we administer and provide patient care. In order for us to provide person-centered and
evidence-based treatment, it is important that we as a future nurse be able to understand the
pathophysiology, symptoms, diagnosis, and management of Atrial Fibrillation. It is also our duty
to provide Atrial Fibrillation patients with individualized health teaching and continuous monitoring
to keep them safe, prevent complications of this condition, and to maintain quality of life.
