GET-PASSIVE

A lot of houses got damaged by the storm.

Get-passive is used to refer to an action that happens to something or someone.

EXAMPLE: The house will get finished eventually.


John and Sue got married last Saturday.
Rome didn´t get built in a day.
Larry has gotten accepted by Smith University.

When will the house get finished?


Read these dialogs. Then highline the get-passive.

1. Dan: The builders are so slow! At this rate, our house will never get finished.
Jan: Try to be patient. Remember, Rome didn´t get built in a day.

2. Ted: Are you responsible for breaking the living room window, Tom?
Tom: No, I don´t know how it got broken, Dad. Why am I always the one gets
blamed when something happens?

3. Kay: Congratulations, Ray. I understand you´ve gotten promoted to a very


important position.

Ray: Thanks, Kay. It´s true that I got selected, but I´m not getting promoted
until next month.

4. Ken: I got accepted by three of the colleges I applied to. Have you gotten
accepted by any yet?
Ben: No, I haven´t gotten accepted by any so far, but I haven´t gotten turned
down by any, either.
AIRMAN ANDREWS GOT ORDERED TO CLEAN UP THE
BARRACKS.
Use the correct form of the get-passive and the words in parentheses to answer the questions in
the dialogs.

EXAMPLE: Dan: What did Airman Andrews get ordered to do?


Ken: (clean up the barracks)
He got ordered to clean up the barracks.

Sam: (during the parade)
