Hussain Shareef
Maldives Phonic Teachers
2 Dear Teachers and Parents,
Assalaam Alaikum!

I am Hussain Shareef, a Teacher from Laamu Fonadhoo. This

book is the result of my passion and time to discover ‘how a
Maldivian student can start reading English the quickest and
the easiest.’

There are many phonic programmes, free or paid, available

nowadays. However, my work over the past 2 years was to
compile a set of words that would suit the average Maldivian
pre-schooler. This book is its outcome.

There is no need for the user of this book to become familiar

with the technical terms such as vowels, consonants, blending,
segmenting, diagraphs, diphthongs, etc to best use this book.

I would like to bring to your attention that this book is just in

the making and is the Workbook for Level 1 readers (LKG and
UKG). The upcoming Reading Book and Teachers Book will fully
complete this initiative. Until then, you may adopt your own
teaching methods or strategies using this book.

You can print the pages to fit a ‘Monitor Book page’ and give
your kids colouring exercises followed by reading.

You will witness fast and fruitful progress in your child’s

reading ability.

Always remember that a fluent reader has a higher cognitive

ability and produces better higher grade results.

To contact me please use the Facebook page: Maldives Phonic

May Allah bless you and your child!

Thank you!

IMPORTANT NOTE

We, South Asians, have the habit of teaching children word

spellings. However, this isn’t the right approach to develop a
fast and fluent reader.

Instead, it is always recommended to conduct reading

programmes in the order presented in this book.

And a very important thing!

Do not teach in this way: bee.ay.tee= bat

Teach in this way: /b/./a/./t/=bat

Say: bu.ay.tu=bat (try not to sound the Dhivehi ubufili much)

My point here is; ‘ay.pee.pee.el.ee =apple’ method is not at all

good. Always emphasise your child to detect and read
individual sounds (one letter or more combined sometimes) and
finally read the word.

It is also important to make a distinction between the basic

sounds of letters ‘a’ and ‘e’. Try to lenghthen the sound of ‘a’
as ‘Eybeyfili’ and shorten the sound of ‘e’ as ‘Ebefili’, in the
beginning. Otherswise your child may start wondering why
BAT is /BET/ but why isn’t BAD, /BED/.

Hope you understand this.

For enquiries feel free to contact me.
