Introduction

Printable products are popular for more than one reason. They are easy and
inexpensive to make, affordable to purchase, and you can build a successful printable
business without investing anything in warehousing or shipping solutions.

If you know anything about printable products, you know that there are tons of them
available to buy. A quick search for printable planners on Etsy shows over 180,000
products.

https://www.etsy.com/search?q=printable%20planner&ref=auto-1

What‟s clear is that the market for printables products is huge. What you may not know
– yet – is that there are five product types that go „beyond printables‟ where you can
expand your profits.

Discover New & Bestselling Products

Your journey to success as an Etsy entrepreneur begins before you create your first
product. The research you do leading up to your launch – or the corrective action you
take if you already have a shop that isn‟t doing as well as you‟d like – is key.

What I‟m getting at is that all products are not created equal. Some are more popular
than others. While the quality and appeal of your specific products is something you can
control, the market itself is not.

In this chapter, I‟ll explain why product research is essential. I‟ll provide you with some
of my favorite resources for product research and give you some pointers on how to
organize your research. Finally, I‟ll share my knowledge about the benefits of seasonal
and evergreen products, how to take inspiration from existing products, and what you
can do to make your products unique.

Beyond Printables

The Importance of Product Research

Product research doesn‟t sound exciting to most people. If you‟re a creative person and
you‟re excited to get started creating printables and related products, the idea of putting
the brakes on your enthusiasm to do research sounds dull, at best.

I hope you‟ll hear me out. Product research might not be glamorous but it‟s necessary. It
can help you:

 Identify the products that are most likely to sell

 Fine-tune the target audience for your products
 Get creative ideas for products you may not have considered

Perhaps most importantly, careful product research saves time. Which would you rather
do? Dive into creating products only to find out later that nobody will buy them; or take a
step back and identify products you know people want?

I‟ll take the second option every time – and I‟m willing to bet you will, too.

Where to Start Your Research

The web is a big place. It‟s one thing to tell you that you should do product research.
But, if you‟re new to creating and selling printable and POD products, then you may
need some guidance to point you in the direction of the best resources.

Craft Count

Craft Count is a terrific resource because it allows you to break down Etsy products by
category. It‟s useful if you want to get a handle on which shops sell the most – and
which products are most popular.

To give you an idea of what you can do with Craft Count, here‟s a screenshot of the
rankings of Etsy shops that sell digital art:

https://www.craftcount.com/category.php?cat=2&subcat=49

You can use the information here to check out individual shops and see what makes
them successful. Here‟s an image of the top selling shop, Vectoria Designs:

Beyond Printables

https://www.etsy.com/shop/VectoriaDesigns

The category list on the left-hand side shows only a small percentage of the products in
this shop. You can easily find out which categories are the most popular by looking at
the number of products in each.

Etsy Search

You know Etsy as a platform for online shops, but it‟s also a large search engine. You
can use Etsy‟s search function to research your audience and the products they buy.
You can search for a keyword such as “printables” or “digital art” or you can look for
products in the categories they list:

10 Copyright © AMY HARROP

Beyond Printables

https://www.etsy.com/c?filter_distracting_content=1

From the items shown here, you might want to check out:

 Craft Supplies and Tools

 Art & Collectibles
 Paper & Party Supplies

Once you select a category, you have the option of filtering. My suggestion is to filter by
average customer review. Typically, products that people love are products that sell
well.

Tips for Organizing Your Ideas

You may not use every idea that turns up during your research now, but that doesn‟t
mean you shouldn‟t keep track of them. Here are some suggestions:

Copyright © AMY HARROP 11

Beyond Printables

 Create a spreadsheet on your computer (or a Google spreadsheet) and make

each idea a line item.
 Consider adding additional columns to indicate product categories, seasons,
grade levels, or anything else you think might be useful.
 Track product sales and reviews, so you can compare them and make
informed decisions about which products to create.
 Save links to products or shops that inspire you. I like to create folders in my
Bookmarks to make it easy to find what I need.)
 If you prefer paper records, buy a planner or journal and keep your ideas
organized there.

Product research allows you to create a product and inspiration toolbox that you can
use now and in the future. Keeping your research organized will ensure that you can
find the items you need.

Benefits of Selling Seasonal Products

Seasonal products often show up on lists of bestselling products. Does that mean you
should include them in your shop? I believe the answer is a qualified yes.

12 Copyright © AMY HARROP

Beyond Printables

https://www.etsy.com/listing/255012290/ugly-sweater-party-invitation-
ugly?ref=shop_home_active_6&frs=1

There‟s no question that seasonal products are popular. For example, in the Fall, you
will notice a lot of Halloween and Thanksgiving themed products. From October through
December, you‟re likely to see many Christmas, Hanukah, and Kwanzaa products.

I love seasonal products and there‟s a place for them in any Etsy shop. However, most
of your products should be evergreen, meaning that they can be sold year-round. It‟s
important to strike the right balance because selling only holiday and seasonal products
may limit your sales.

Beyond Printables

How to Make Your Products Unique

I love using existing products for inspiration. It‟s a good way to shortcut your research
and learn what‟s popular. That said, it‟s never okay to copy somebody else‟s design.

Copying someone else can damage your reputation irreparably. While there are many
printables and POD products available, the people who buy them tend to be very aware
of their options. If someone notices that you‟ve lifted an idea from another seller, they
won‟t buy from you. The worst-case scenario is that the original creator will find out and
sue you.

The solution is to be inspired without copying. You might see a piece of wall art with a
popular quotation on it, like this one from Elizabeth Taylor.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/820399062/quote-print-
a4?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_q

Beyond Printables

The quote itself is free to use. However, you‟ll need to create a print that is uniquely
your own. You can do that by:

 Using different colors.

 Using a unique font (or fonts.)
 Adding illustrations or images.
 Adding a border.
 Putting a pattern in the background.

I hope you get the idea. There‟s lots of room for creativity in product creation. You could
even create multiple versions of the same quote – or offer a custom option!

Making Templates Unique

If you are planning to sell on Etsy, one of their requirements is that you make your
designs unique. I‟ve included detailed editing instructions for changing up the templates
included with your purchase that you‟ll find in the members area.

In the upcoming pages, I also share lots of resources for templates as well. Just
make sure you modify these. You can change the text, but you can also do more
subtle (and fast) options like adding a filter or changing the color. A good way to
customize is by using the HUE slider bar or alternately, the "Curves" function in a photo
editor like Photo Pea.

Now that you know how to do product research, it‟s time to move on to a new topic. In
the next chapter, I‟ll show you how to create digital patterns – even if you don‟t have any
graphic design experience at all!

How to Create Your Own Digital Patterns (No Graphic Design

Needed!)

For people who are interested in sewing, crafting, or scrapbooking, patterns are
indispensable. They provide backdrops for your creative ideas. They can be used in
collages or as backgrounds.

In this chapter, I‟ll teach you how to create your own digital patterns even if you have no
graphic design experience at all. You‟ll learn the benefits of creating patterns. I‟ll show
you some of the most popular scrapbooking shops on Etsy. Then, I‟ll share some digital
pattern tutorials and places to get done-for-you patterns. We‟ll talk about the legal ins
and outs of selling patterns, and I‟ll give you my best tips for selling digital patterns on
Etsy and Spoonflower.

Benefits of Creating and Selling Patterns

I want to start by talking about the benefits of creating and selling digital patterns. In
case you‟re not familiar, a pattern in the world of printables can refer to digital paper,
clip art, alphabets, and anything else that people can print and use in their creative
projects.

Patterns are popular among people who enjoy scrapbooking, sewing, and craft projects.
People who are new to a skill often feel unsure where to start. Having a pattern allows
them to be creative with their work and may even provide inspiration for a design if they
need one.
Another way of looking at it is that patterns provide inspiration and fun. Both beginning
and experienced scrapbookers may buy the patterns that you create.

I like patterns as an income stream because they are easy to create, easy to bundle,
and creating your first one can make it easier to create subsequent products.

Popular Scrapbooking Shops on Etsy

I always like to show examples of what‟s possible with the products I help people
create. Here are some of the most popular scrapbooking shops on Etsy to illustrate
what you can accomplish by creating and selling patterns.

Clover and Lilly

Clover and Lilly is an Etsy shop that sells digital paper and clip art. They have some
beautiful products, such as this pack of 20 different digital paper patterns:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/227772859/swim-spa-digital-paper-in-lime-
green?ref=shop_home_feat_2&pro=1

As you can see, the price for this bundle is low at only $1.97. However, patterns can
take only minutes to create and the creator of this shop has almost 50,000 sales.

Chubby Eyes Digital

Chubby Eyes Digital is a shop that sells a variety of patterns, including digital paper,
digital alphabets, borders, and clip art. Here‟s a selection of the digital alphabets they
offer:

https://www.etsy.com/shop/ChubbyEyesDigital?section_id=22120869

You‟ll notice that they offer alphabets in different colors and styles as well as holiday-
themed alphabets. This shop also sells commercial licenses for its items, which is a
good way to earn a bit more when you sell to people who plan to use your patterns to
make their own products.

Pretty Grafik Design

Pretty Grafik Design has almost half a million sales. This shop‟s primary products are
digital clip art, digital papers, and digital stamps.

Beyond Printables

https://www.etsy.com/listing/264152236/buy-20-get-10-off-fairy-digital-
stamp?ref=shop_home_active_8&pro=1

One thing this shop does that I like is sell a lifetime access pass to more than 1,600
bundles with new patterns added every year.

My Clip Art Store

My Clip Art Store specializes in – you guessed it – clip art. They have over 70,000
sales. One of the things they do that I like is that they offer clip art singles for a dollar
each. Here‟s a sample of what they offer:

Copyright © AMY HARROP 19

Beyond Printables

https://www.etsy.com/shop/MyClipArtStore?section_id=12287532

They also offer licensing of $10 per item or $100 for commercial access to the entire
shop, as well as custom designs.

I hope you have a feeling for the kinds of things you can do if you decide to create and
sell digital patterns. There‟s a huge market for them.

Digital Pattern Tutorials

What if you don‟t have any experience creating digital patterns but you want to create
them yourself?

Good news. Digital patterns are easy to create and I‟ve found three tutorials that will
show you how to create them, step by step.

The first is this tutorial, which demonstrates the best way to create a patterned
background in Adobe Photoshop. If you already have Photoshop and want to create
and sell patterns, I recommend this tutorial. However, Photoshop is expensive, and I

20 Copyright © AMY HARROP

Beyond Printables

would not recommend buying it for the purpose of making patterns. There are other
tools you can use that are free or inexpensive.

If you‟ve been following me for a while, you know that Canva is one of my all-time
favorite content creation tools. The free option has plenty of free templates and tools
and the paid version offers additional tools and functions.

I love this Canva tutorial which demonstrates, in just a few easy steps, how to create a
seamless pattern to sell or use with Canva‟s free Instagram template. (You should
always use a square space if you want to create a seamless pattern.)

Another tool I like – and one that‟s not as well-known as Canva – is GIMP. It‟s a free
cross-platform image editor that you can use to take patterns that might not be truly
seamless and get rid of the seams. This tutorial demonstrates how to do it. If you‟ve
played around with patterns that need some refining, this tutorial will help you get them
right.

Done-for-You Patterns

Making your own patterns is easy, but you may prefer the convenience of finding done-
for-you patterns online that you can sell in your store. Keep in mind that you will need to
pay for a commercial license if you want to resell a pattern you buy. Here are some of
the resources I like for DFY patterns.

Creative Market

Creative Market is a huge marketplace where you can buy patterns, vectors, and more.
Here‟s an example of a pattern bundle I found there:

Copyright © AMY HARROP 21

Beyond Printables

https://creativemarket.com/designdell/3759290-650-ESSENTIAL-Vector-Patterns

Notice that the patterns are editable. The price for personal use is lower than the price
for a basic or extended commercial license.

Vexels

My next resource for done-for-you patterns is Vexels. Here‟s an example of a pattern I

found for sale there:

https://www.vexels.com/vectors/preview/216634/sakura-flower-pattern-design

Beyond Printables

You‟ll notice that you have an option of buying the individual license for $5 or
subscribing for access to thousands of designs. It‟s also important to pay attention to
the button on the bottom right that says, “How to credit.” That‟s an indicator that you will
need to pay for a premium license if you want to use the pattern without attribution.

Wow Patterns

Wow Patterns is a site where you can find thousands of free patterns for individual use.
If you want to use them for commercial purposes, you‟ll need to contact the site for
licensing information. Here‟s a selection of the kinds of patterns they have available:

www.wowpatterns.com

One of the things I like about this site is that it‟s easy to search for patterns by category
or keyword. It‟s also a great place to find inspiration for your original patterns!

Copyright © AMY HARROP 23

Beyond Printables

Pixabay

Pixabay has a huge library of images that are free for commercial use, mostly without
attribution. That makes it a terrific resource if you want to get started selling patterns
quickly. (Note that you should search for patterns to find images that will work for this
purpose.)

https://pixabay.com/images/search/patterns/

What I love about Pixabay is that they have so many unique images, including graphics
and photographs. It‟s possible to make breathtaking patterns using the images you find
here.

Deposit Photos

Deposit Photos is a paid stock image site that has monthly and annual packages
available. While you‟ll need to pay for the patterns you find here, they are free for
commercial use.

24 Copyright © AMY HARROP

Beyond Printables

https://depositphotos.com/vector-images/patterns.html

You‟ll notice that some of these patterns are single patterns and others are bundles.
The great news? The bundles cost the same (one download) as individual items.

Creating Your Terms of Use

If you plan to sell patterns, you‟ll need to write and post your terms of use for them. The
terms tell people what they may and may not do with the patterns they buy from you.

Some people have strict terms of use that prohibit others from using their patterns
exactly as sold, meaning that they would have to make subtle changes before using
them. Others allow the patterns to be used as-is. You‟ll need to decide what you want
and create your terms of use accordingly.

If you decide to buy done-for-you patterns, be sure to read the terms of use and adhere
to them. If you don‟t, you could end up in legal trouble if the creator decides to sue you
for violating the terms. This article provides a good overview of your options, but in
general, you should specify:

Copyright © AMY HARROP 25

Beyond Printables

 Whether your images may be changed

 Whether they may be used as-is
 Whether you are licensing them for commercial or personal use
 Whether you require attribution

Most of the pattern shops I‟ve seen on Etsy offer tiered prices for individual, limited
commercial, and unlimited commercial use.

Selling Tips

One of the things I like the most about selling patterns is that there are plenty of selling
options. I‟ve already highlighted some of them, but let‟s review.

First, you have the option of selling patterns one at a time. Some people like the option
of buying exactly what they need and not shelling out extra money for a bundle.

Here are some other selling tips to consider trying:

 Create bundles around a single color or event. For example, you could create
a blue bundle or an Easter bundle.
 Reuse your most popular patterns. One of the quickest and easiest ways to
expand your offerings is to take patterns in one color and remake them in
another color. Your blue bundle could easily become a pink bundle or a yellow
bundle.
 Create a mix of evergreen and seasonal bundles. Seasonal bundles are
popular but limited in their range.

You should also pay close attention to your sales figures. If you have a pattern or
bundle that‟s not selling, you may want to pull it from your shop and replace it with
something new.

Selling POD on Spoonflower

To close out this chapter, I want to tell you about Spoonflower, a site where you can
take your printable and digital patterns and turn them into tangible products people can
buy.

Spoonflower offers you the option of taking your patterns and putting them onto:

 Fabric
 Wallpaper
 Bedding
 Household items
Here‟s a look at some of the vintage tablecloth patterns you can find there:

https://www.spoonflower.com/en/shop?on=rectangularTablecloths&availability=ForSale
&sort=bestSelling&style=Vintage

If you decide to sell on Spoonflower, you can create your own shop and earn
commission whenever a customer chooses your pattern for their wallpaper, pillow, or

cocktail napkins. The commission system is tiered so that you earn more when your
sales increase.

What I love most about creating patterns is that the skills you‟ve learned in this chapter
will help you create other kinds of printable products – including the ones we‟ll talk
about in the next chapter. Let‟s talk about party supplies!

28 Copyright © AMY HARROP

Beyond Printables

Be the Life of the Party: Design Party Supplies

Everyone loves a party. In fact, people throw parties every day for all kinds of reasons.
There are the usual suspects – birthdays, weddings, and graduations – and the
unexpected parties. And while some people take a haphazard approach to party
planning, others strive for a coordinated look that will take their party to the next level.

That‟s where you come in! Printable and POD party supplies have a huge place in the
market. In this chapter, you‟ll learn everything you need to know about them, including
which products to create, where to find cartoons and graphics to use on your products,
and how to sell them and maximize your profits.

Benefits of Creating and Selling Party Supplies

The primary benefit of selling party supplies is that they‟re popular and easy to sell.
People are always looking for fun and creative party ideas.

Another reason I like party supplies is you can take one design or pattern and turn it into
a variety of products. In other words, you can do the bulk of the design work once and
then diversify your product offerings without spending a lot of additional time to create
more products.

Party supplies make natural bundles, too. You can take the guesswork out of party
decorations for your customers by offering them a single bundle that includes everything
they need for their party.

Party Supply Products to Create

Party supply products come in all shapes and sizes. Whatever types of parties you
decide to target, here are some of the products you may want to create:

Copyright © AMY HARROP 29

Beyond Printables

 Party invitations
 Party signs
 Party banners
 Party games
 Thank you tags
 Soda wraps
 Candy wraps
 Photo props
 Stickers

There‟s really no limit to what you can do, so have fun with it! Keep in mind that kids‟
parties may have different printables than adult parties. Adults may not be interested in
party games – at least not the printable kind!

Examples of Party Supplies

Let‟s look at some examples of party supplies to give you an idea of the kinds of things
you can create and sell. I tried to find products that illustrate the range of what‟s
possible when you sell party supplies.

Let‟s start with a construction bundle for a kids‟ birthday party. I found this one in the
You Grew Printables shop on Etsy:

30 Copyright © AMY HARROP

Beyond Printables

https://www.etsy.com/listing/680178618/construction-party-bundle-editable

I love this bundle because it includes invitations and a banner and thank you notes, as
well as a few special extras: cupcake toppers, popcorn bag templates, and coloring
pages. This is truly an all-in-one party supply kit.

Here‟s another bundle for an Adopt-a-Pet party from the Printer Fairy on Etsy. With its
focus on animals, it stands out from some of the other party bundles I‟ve seen:

Copyright © AMY HARROP 31

Beyond Printables

https://www.etsy.com/listing/548640581/pet-adoption-station-party-package-puppy

This bundle includes cute party signs for games and activities and a pet adoption
certificate. However, some items – including invitations – are sold separately.

You also have the option of selling items individually. Here‟s a cute pirate banner from
Grey Fox Illustrations on Etsy:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/585316897/pirate-banner-pirate-happy-birthday

For specialized products like this one, customers may need to pay to have the items
professionally printed. Later, I‟ll share some print on demand integration resources for
you to use with your Etsy shop.

Finally, here‟s a party supply bundle that could work for kids or adults in a Star Wars
theme. It comes from the Darling Custom Prints shop on Etsy:

32 Copyright © AMY HARROP

Beyond Printables

https://www.etsy.com/listing/648156254/editable-printable-star-wars-white

Invitations are sold separately, but this bundle includes an editable menu and food
signs, water bottle labels, and other fun items.

I hope these give you an idea of the range of products you can create – and how much
fun you can have selling printable party supplies.

Types of Parties to Create Products For

Are you wondering how many different types of parties you can create products for?
Here‟s just a partial list of the possibilities:

 Birthdays
 Wedding showers
 Bachelorette or bachelor parties
 Weddings
 Baby showers
 Christenings
 First communions

Copyright © AMY HARROP 33

Beyond Printables

 Bar mitzvahs
 Graduation parties
 Gender reveal parties
 Wine and cheese parties
 Murder mystery parties
 Christmas parties
 Halloween parties
 Thanksgiving dinner
 Fourth of July celebrations

Within the theme of kids‟ birthday parties, you could – at least in theory – make
hundreds of different party packs for different themes. I already showed you some
examples, but you might also consider:

 Princess party
 Flower party
 Alien party
 Firefighter party
 Wild West party
 Bowling party
 Pool party

The same is true of all-age parties and adult parties. Once you get the hang of creating
party supplies, you‟ll be able to create additional designs and products quickly.

One thing to keep in mind: you need to be careful with any party theme that involves
copyright-protected or trademarked characters or images. Disney won‟t look kindly on
you using images of its animated princesses, for example. Unless you can obtain a
license for use or verify that an image is in the public domain, don‟t use it.

Resources for Illustrations and Cartoons

I always like to include resources to help you create your products, and for party
printables, illustrations and cartoons are two of your best options. Here are some of my
favorite places to find images to use for your party products.

The Hungry Jpeg is a site where you can find thousands of premium graphics at
affordable prices. Here‟s a screenshot showing just a few of the designs they have
available.

https://thehungryjpeg.com/

Each product they sell has licensing information with opportunities to upgrade.

Fontsy is a resource where you can find a huge variety of bundles of graphics for your
party products. Here‟s a look at their seasonal selection:

These designs could be used for everything from invitations to party signs and
nametags.

Pixeden is another resource I like a lot. I use them primarily for vectors, which can be
easily sized up or down for use on a variety of products. Here‟s a look at some of their
products:

Beyond Printables

Craft Bundles is a terrific site with themed image and graphic bundles. Products come in
a variety of formats and most must be altered in some way to be resold. Here‟s an
adorable woodland bundle I found there:

Design Cuts offers a huge array of images and illustrations that you can use to make
party products. Here‟s a collection of cute cat illustrations you could use for a pet
adoption event or a party:

Finally, Spoon Graphics is a site with a ton of free resources, including textured
backgrounds, fonts, and more. Here‟s one of my favorites, a bundle that includes
backgrounds to make your party products look like antiques:

https://blog.spoongraphics.co.uk/category/freebies

There are other resources as well. The main thing to keep in mind is that you should
always read the license and terms of use before you use any illustration, graphic, or
cartoon in your party products.

Tips for Creating and Marketing Party Supply Kits

There are some Etsy shops that sell party supplies as single products. However, I
strongly recommend creating party supply kits. They provide an easy way for your
customers to get everything they need in one purchase. They can be confident that
everything will go together and look great.

Here are some tips to help you create and market party supply kits.

Beyond Printables

1. Brainstorm a list of items that someone might need for the party in question.
For example, you might want cupcake toppers or stickers for party favors for a
kids‟ party. For an adult wine and cheese party, you might include signs to
identify wines and cheeses and printable charms for wine glasses.
2. Make sure everything goes together. You don‟t need to use the same images
for every item. For example, you could round out an astronaut party bundle
with some fun images of stars and planets.
3. Put everything into a single downloadable file. Nobody‟s going to want to
download 10 different files to get what they bought. Zip the items to make it
easy for your customers. (Note: this will also make it easier for customers to
bring files to a printer or to a POD service.)
4. Include your items in multiple formats. For example, if you‟re selling editable
invitations so parents can add their kids‟ names to them, you‟d want an
editable PDF file. Other common formats include .JPG and .PNG format.

If there‟s an extra that you‟re not including in your bundle, you should consider linking to
it in your product listing.

Third Party Stores for Customizable Products

Do you want your party supply products and bundles to be fully customizable? Some
customers may be comfortable using an editable PDF file, but others may need a bit of
help. The solution is to partner with a third-party store to allow customers to customize
your products as soon as they buy them.

There are two resources I recommend. The first is Corjl, a site that fully integrates with
Etsy, as well as with Shopify and WooCommerce. All three of their paid plans allow you
to customize unlimited products, but you‟ll get discounts for volume. Here‟s a look at
their plans:

Copyright © AMY HARROP 39

Beyond Printables

https://www.corjl.com/en/learn/pricing/

Notice that the price you pay per customization gets lower depending on your plan. If
you‟re just starting out, the basic plan should be enough for you; but as your shop
grows, you should consider upgrading.

The other customization option I like is Templett. Their monthly plans start at $29 per
month, making it a more expensive option than Corjl. However, they also have per
transaction fees starting at just $0.29, which can be useful if you‟re just starting out and
want an affordable way to allow your customers to personalize the products they buy.

Templett also has some nice features, including one that allows you to set a limit on the
number of times any one customer can download your templates. Likewise, they have
an option that allows you to lock certain items in your templates, so they cannot be
changed.

Beyond Printables

https://templett.com/sellers/now-lock-objects-in-your-templates-so-users-cannot-edit-or-

Like Corjl, Templett integrates fully with Etsy. It‟s a nice option to allow your customers
to personalize your products, and I strongly suggest partnering with one of these two
companies when you set up your Etsy shop.

Now that you‟re have the guidance you need to create and sell printable party products,
let‟s move on to a related topic: printable greeting cards. That‟s what we‟ll talk about in
the next chapter.

Create Your Own Printable Greeting Cards

Greeting cards are a popular way of expressing gratitude, sympathy, congratulations,

and a host of other sentiments. Some people keep meaningful cards they‟ve received
throughout their lives. People love them – and in this chapter I‟ll tell you how to create
and sell your own printable greeting cards.

Benefits of Creating and Selling Printable Greeting Cards

Let‟s start with the benefits of turning your attention to printable greeting cards. The
numbers are undeniable:

 In the United States, consumers purchase approximately 6.5 billion greeting

cards every year.
 Greeting card sales are estimated between seven and eight billion dollars
annually.
 Women are responsible for 80% of greeting card sales.
 Increasingly, young people are buying printable greeting cards.
 The most popular non-holiday greeting cards are birthday cards, and the most
popular holiday cards are Christmas cards.

You can see why I recommend creating greeting cards. There‟s a huge market for them
– and if you can create cards that are unique and memorable, it will be easy for you to
find your niche.

Types of Greeting Cards

One of the best things about greeting cards is that people send them for almost every
occasion – or for no occasion at all. To help you understand where the biggest markets
are, I‟m going to list cards in order of popularity, starting with everyday greeting cards:

42 Copyright © AMY HARROP

Beyond Printables

 Birthdays
 Sympathy
 Thank you
 Weddings
 Thinking of you
 Get well
 New baby
 Congratulations

Holiday cards are also popular, and here are some of the most important holidays in
order of the number of cards people buy to celebrate them:

 Christmas
 Valentine‟s Day
 Mother‟s Day
 Father‟s Day
 Graduation (not really a holiday, but that‟s how it‟s organized in the statistics)
 Easter
 Halloween
 Thanksgiving
 St. Patrick‟s Day

Popular holidays that weren‟t included in the statistics include Hanukah, Kwanzaa, New
Year‟s, Ramadan, and the Fourth of July.

Increasingly, people are making and buying greeting cards for other reasons, too. I don‟t
have statistics for these, but some of the other fun categories I‟ve seen include:

 Galentine‟s Day (February 13th, popularized by the TV show Parks and

Recreation)
 New Home or apartment

Copyright © AMY HARROP 43

Beyond Printables

 Divorce
 Pet adoption
 Friendship
 New job

Keep in mind that in each one of these categories, there‟s lots of room for variety. For
example, in the category of birthday cards, you could make serious cards, funny cards,
and cards for people of all ages, including cards to celebrate milestone birthdays and
cards for specific family members (Mom, Dad, Son, Daughter, Grandmother,
Grandfather, Sister, Brother, etc.) There is a ton of opportunity to earn money selling
greeting cards.

Examples of Printable Greeting Cards

Now, let‟s look at some examples of unique printable greeting cards I found online. The
first one is an anniversary card from Simply Said Paper Company on Etsy.

Notice the way the contrasting fonts work together. I especially like that the final line in
red mimics the look of a heartbeat on a monitor.

Here‟s a friendship card that uses the definition of “bestie” as its design. It comes from
Love Letters Ink Press on Etsy:

Here‟s a cool graduation card from Snowbound Prints on Etsy:

I like the simplicity of this card. And here‟s another one I like from The Little Inkspot Co
on Etsy. This one is to welcome a new baby:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/496549600/printable-new-baby-card-printable-baby

Finally, here‟s a lovely sympathy card from The Digital Daisy AU:

These cards illustrate what‟s possible with printable greeting cards. I want to note here
that these cards are all priced between $3.00 and $4.00. You should price your cards in
the same range to ensure that your shop is competitive.

Tips for Making Unique Greeting Cards

The best way to ensure that you sell the greeting cards you create is to make them
unique and special. People don‟t want to send a “same old” greeting card for a special
occasion. They want something memorable. Here are some pointers to help you create
unique greeting cards.

1. Do your research. You can‟t be unique unless you know what‟s already out
there. I suggest selecting one event or occasion and doing a deep dive on the
available cards, both from traditional sellers and Etsy sellers. Make notes of
any gaps in what‟s available because those could point in the direction of a
new niche.

Copyright © AMY HARROP 47

Beyond Printables

2. Consider creating a memorable greeting card line. Branding is just as

important in the greeting card industry as it is anywhere else. If you identify a
cool niche or a memorable and quirky way of making your cards, stick with it
and expand it to other holidays and occasions.
3. Focus on your customer‟s emotions. People send greeting cards because they
feel something. Whether you decide you want to make people laugh or feel
appreciated (or something else), your cards should elicit an emotional
response.
4. Finally, be original. Don‟t do what somebody else has already done. Find a
way to bring your personality and sensibility to the cards you create.

It may take some time to land on the right tone and idea for your greeting card line, but
if you create something memorable, people will buy your cards.

Greeting Card Personalization

To close out the chapter, I want to talk about greeting card personalization. While some
of your customers will be fine with printing out a blank card and writing in it, others may
want to personalize the cards before they print them.

I have already mentioned two personalization options and how much they cost, so I
won‟t go into detail about them again. As a reminder, I‟m talking about Corjl and
Templett.

You can also offer personalization directly to your customers. It will require a little more
work on your part, but it may also enable you to charge more for your designs. You may
also want to consider offering custom greeting cards where people choose the design
elements they like, and you create a card using them.

Coming up next, I‟ll talk about how to create and sell printable wall art, including design
options and resources for your customers to have their art printed.

Printable Wall Art

We all like to have artwork to hang on our walls, but it can be expensive to buy
something that you really love. That‟s where printable wall art comes in.

Printable wall art is inexpensive to create and far less expensive to buy than a fully
framed print. In this chapter, I‟ll share the benefits of creating printable wall art, give you
the resources I use to create printable wall art that sells, and show you some examples
of popular printable wall art. I‟ll also tell you which fulfillment options will work best for
your customers.

Benefits of Creating Printable Wall Art

You might not think of yourself as creative or artistic, but that doesn‟t mean you can‟t
create printable wall art. Here are some of the reasons why I recommend printable wall
art.

 Printable wall art is popular. According to Etsy, there are 935,715 pieces of
printable wall art for sale on their site as of the time I‟m writing this. That‟s
nearly one million products for sale.
 You don‟t need to be able to draw or sketch to create wall art. The simple
graphic design tools I‟ll show you will help you create art that people will want
in just a few minutes.
 You can create printable wall art without any up-front investment. (There are
paid tools you may want to use, but you can create beautiful art with free
tools.)

Printable wall art can be as simple as a quote against a pretty background, or as

complex as an original, layered illustration. You can start simple and discover your
personal style. As you build your design skills, you can create more complex designs.

Programs & Websites to Use to Create Printable Wall Art

As I mentioned, there are many tools you can use to create beautiful wall art to sell
online. Some are free and some you would need to buy or pay a monthly fee to use.
Here are some of my favorites.

Canva

I don‟t need to say too much about Canva since I‟ve already mentioned it. There are
free and paid options, you can create an account using your Facebook or Google login,
and they have a ton of templates to help get you started designing wall art.

To show you how easy it is, here‟s a simple quote print I created. It took me less than
five minutes to create:

Beyond Printables

Every element of the design is customizable. You can change fonts and colors, rotate
the design elements, and import your own designs if you prefer.

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is paid software that‟s used by professional graphic designers and
photographers. It‟s one of the more expensive options, but it‟s also one of the most
versatile. You can draw directly on your iPad or tablet, rotate design elements, select
and move objects, and more. Prices start at $20.99 per month.

Here‟s an example of a beautiful piece of art created using Adobe Photoshop:

Gimp

Gimp is another tool I mentioned earlier. It‟s a free image editor that you can use to
create and manipulate designs.

Here‟s an image from their website that shows what‟s possible if you use Gimp to create
original artwork:

https://www.gimp.org/

Pic Monkey

Pic Monkey is photo editing and graphic design software that you can use to create and
edit wall art. I particularly like it because it allows you to create vectors, which can be
resized easily – perfect for wall art. They offer a free 7-day trial and prices start at $7.99
per month.

They have a huge selection of fonts, colors, and templates that you can use to create
your designs. Here‟s a look at a tiny sample of the clip art they have available:

Beyond Printables

They also have icons, graphic shapes, emoji, and more. Everything is fully
customizable. If you plan to sell wall art, Pic Monkey is a good investment.

Photopea

Photopea is a free graphic design tool that you can access online. You can choose from
their available backdrops or create your own. Each element can be isolated and
manipulated using their simple interface.

Here‟s an example of a quote print I created using Photopea:

Here‟s a close-up of the design menu, which shows how you can select and change
each element:

This is an easy and versatile tool to use.

Pixlr

Pixlr is an online photo editor and design tool with a free plan and paid plans starting at
$3.99 per month. You can use images and design elements from their huge library of
options. Then you can edit each element by applying filters, adding text, changing
colors and fonts, applying stickers, and more.

Here‟s an example of a quote print I created using Pixlr with an image from their library:

Once you familiarize yourself with Pixlr‟s dashboard and tools, you can create unique
printable art in just a few minutes.

Graphics for Printable Wall Art

Printable wall art is fun to create and one of the things I like about it is that there are so
many places online where you can find graphics to use in your printable art. Here are
some of my favorites.

Creative Market

I‟ve already mentioned Creative Market. It‟s a huge online marketplace where you can
buy individual or bundled graphics to use in your designs, including printable wall art.

Copyright © AMY HARROP 57

Beyond Printables

What I like the most about Creative Market is how affordable the graphics are. Here‟s
an example of a bundle with over 2,800 graphics in it. The base price is only $32 and
the commercial license – which is what you‟d need – is $45.

https://creativemarket.com/MarsalaDigital2/5152991-BUNDLE-women-abstract-
summer-more%21

The commercial license allows you to use the images for up to 5,000 digital products.
That should be enough in most cases. The extended license expands that number to
250,000. If your business blows up, you might need the extended license. That‟s a good
problem to have!

Pixabay

Pixabay is a free photo and graphic site that I mentioned earlier. They have a huge
library of images that are free to use without attribution. Here‟s an image of jellyfish that
I think could be used effectively in a piece of wall art:

58 Copyright © AMY HARROP

Beyond Printables

https://pixabay.com/photos/jellyfish-fauna-marine-fauna-5252859/

Notice that beneath the green download button, there‟s a statement that reads, “Free for
commercial use. No attribution required.” That means you can use this image for free
and without attributing it to the person who created it – and you can sell products that
include this image without paying royalties.

Unsplash

Unsplash is another free photography site that‟s ideal for creating wall art because it
has a library of beautiful photos. More are added every day. They have a searchable
database and all images are available for commercial use. However, the Unsplash
license states that images may not be sold without “significant modification.” That
means you‟ll need to edit the images before selling them.

Here's a small selection of the nature photos Unsplash has available for use:

Copyright © AMY HARROP 59

Beyond Printables

https://unsplash.com/t/nature
You can export these images and save them to your computer or upload them to Canva
or one of the other graphic design tools I‟ve mentioned.

Deposit Photos

Free sites are wonderful but sometimes, it‟s worthwhile to pay a little bit to get access to
a huge library of images. Deposit Photos is one of my favorite stock photo sites.

This is just a tiny fraction of what I found when I searched for images of ocean waves:

60 Copyright © AMY HARROP

Beyond Printables

https://depositphotos.com/stock-photos/ocean-waves.html

As is the case with Unsplash and Pixabay, you can export these images and edit them
using Photoshop or one of the other editing and graphic design tools I have mentioned.

Examples of Popular Printable Wall Art

Now, let‟s look at some examples of printable wall art to inspire you. As I mentioned,
there are nearly one million pieces of printable wall art for sale on Etsy. Here are a few
of my favorite shops.

Wall Décor Ideas

Wall Décor Ideas is an Etsy shop specializing in printable wall art. The shop has 13,543
sales. Here‟s a set of three prints that you can buy there:

This seller provides a digital file that allows buyers to print the artwork in 18 different
sizes ranging from small (4” by 5”) to large (23” by 33”).

ArtCult

ArtCult is a beautiful Etsy shop with over 83,000 sales to date. They have a wide range
of printables in a variety of categories. Here‟s one of my favorites:

that‟s available to you. The fine print says that buyers may print this image as many
times as they want.

Daniella Duran Designs

Daniella Duran Designs is an Etsy shop specializing in modern wall art. They have more
than 800 sales and a selection of cool quote art, including these:

What I like about this shop is its modernity. It shows what a wide range of styles is
possible with printable wall art.

Fulfillment Options: Wall Art Print-on-Demand to Integrate with Etsy

If you‟re selling wall art in small sizes, then the people who buy it may be able to print it
on a home printer. However, if people want large sizes of art, you should provide them
with a fulfillment option that will allow them to print your artwork in the size they want.

Here are some fulfillment resources that integrate with Etsy.

64 Copyright © AMY HARROP

Beyond Printables

 Printful offers full Etsy integration that is easy to connect with your Etsy shop.
There‟s a 5% transaction fee plus $0.20 to publish your products. You can find
a full tutorial showing how to use Printful to sell on Etsy here.
 Art of Where is another print-on-demand and drop shipping option that
integrates with Etsy. There‟s a 3.5% transaction fee plus $0.20 per published
listing.
 Gooten is the third option I recommend. They don‟t have set prices the way
the other two services do. Instead, they charge based on printing the specific
product your customer buys. You can review their prices for printable wall art
here. The upside of using Gooten is that you won‟t pay a percentage. Instead,
you can build the cost of printing into your price.

I hope you‟re feeling inspired and ready to start creating printable wall art of your own.

Coming up next, I‟ll tell you all about creating and selling stickers for planners – another
hugely popular category of printables. Keep reading to learn more.

Beyond Printables

Stickers for Planners and Other Uses

Stickers are everywhere online. They can be used in planners of all kinds. They‟re also
great for kids‟ schoolwork, for creating invitations and cards, and for hundreds of other
uses from decorating items in your home to rewarding good behavior.

In this chapter, I‟ll walk you through everything you need to know about creating and
selling printable stickers, including types of stickers to sell, tips for creating unique
stickers, and resources and POD options for your printable stickers.

Benefits of Creating and Selling Stickers

Stickers are truly one of the most popular product categories in the world of printables.
As of the time I‟m writing this, there are more than 2.1 million sticker products listed on
Etsy. Other benefits of creating and selling stickers are:

 Stickers are easy and fun to create

 They‟re popular with both kids and adults
 They can be adapted for many uses from schoolwork to crafts
 They may be printed at home or via a fulfillment service
 They‟re easy to bundle and repurpose

I love stickers as a printable product. There are endless creative possibilities and
inspirations.

Types of Stickers to Sell

Stickers come in many categories, making them an extremely versatile product category
to explore for your printable shop on Etsy. Here are some of the types of stickers you
may want to create and sell:

66 Copyright © AMY HARROP

Beyond Printables

 Planner stickers
 Educational stickers
 Decorative stickers
 Holiday stickers
 Birthday stickers
 Quote stickers
 Joke stickers

You can have so much fun creating different types of stickers. Keep in mind, too, that
the designs you create in other categories (including wall art and greeting cards) can be
put on stickers, too.

Tips for Making Planner Supplies

Planning stickers and supplies are popular and easy to create. If you want to explore
this category of printables, here are some tips to help you.

Choose a Size

Planners come in all shapes and sizes. Some of the planner shops on Etsy cater to one
brand of planner – for example, Happy Planner. All their products are designed to be
used with that brand.

Other shops create planner sheets and stickers in a variety of sizes, so that their buyers
who use different planners can all use them. If you create vector files, they‟ll be easy to
resize and tailor to different planners.

Beyond Printables

Create Planning Kits

You already know that I‟m a big fan of product bundling for printable products.
Customers love bundles because they perceive them as being valuable. They can get a
lot for their money.

When you create planning kits, I suggest bundling several related items together. These
might include planning sheets, stickers, and schedules. Each kit may be tied to a theme.
Some popular themes include travel, weddings, and new babies.

Make Your Planning Supplies Visually Attractive

Because there are a lot of stickers for sale on Etsy, it‟s important to make your stickers
stand out. One way to do that is to use bright colors. They catch the eye!
Another thing that it is important to keep in mind for DIY printing is the cost of ink.
Brightly colored stickers require a lot of ink. You may want to consider offering a print
fulfillment option as an alternative for your customers.

Make Mockups

Mockups allow customers to get an idea of what your stickers and other planner
products will look like in use. Here are some resources you can use to create mockups.

Smart Mockups is a site with free and paid resources. With the free account, you can
create up to 200 mockups. Pricing for the paid accounts start at $9 per month.

Beyond Printables

https://smartmockups.com/category/print/all

Once you create a mockup, you can post it as an image on your Etsy shop to give
customers an idea of what they can do with your products.

Placeit Generator

Placeit is a design site with a mockup generator. They have a free account and their
paid account costs $14.95 per month.

They have sticker templates and mockups in their library of free mockups, and you‟ll get
access to more if you opt for the premium account:

Once you create a mockup, you can download it, save it, and post it in your Etsy shop.

Creative Market

I‟ve already talked about Creative Market twice, so I‟ll cut to the chase. In addition to
patterns and graphics, you can also buy mockup templates for your stickers and planner
products. You‟ll need to pay for them, but you can get big bundles of sticker markups for
relatively low prices:

This bundle has 80 sticker designs and 30 mockups, and it sells for $16.

Resources for Making Your Own Stickers

Making your own stickers isn‟t difficult, but if you‟ve never done it before it‟s useful to
have some resources. Here are some resources you may want to check out.

 Productive and Pretty has a blog post that explains in detail how to make your
own stickers.
 WebSticker has tools to help you create unique and original stickers and a
blog that features information about how to start a sticker business.
 Stickers.pub is a site where you can open your own sticker shop or design
custom stickers to sell.

 All About Planners has a ton of resources to help you design and create your
own stickers for planners.
 Love from Mim has a free guide on how to create planner stickers.

You can also use many of the other resources I‟ve mentioned to create your stickers,
including Canva and Photoshop.

POD Options for Stickers

Print on demand is, in my opinion, the best option for stickers. Printing stickers at home
can be tricky. Even regularly shaped stickers can be difficult to line up properly. The last
thing you want is for your customers to be frustrated when they try to use your products.

Many of the print on demand options I have already mentioned will work for your sticker
shop, but I have a new one to mention, as well. Here are your options:

 Printful has an option for printing die-cut stickers, which you can integrate with
your Etsy shop.
 Printify is a resource I haven‟t mentioned yet. It integrates with Etsy and offers
print on demand and drop shipping for your printable products.
 Gooten is another resource I have already mentioned that you can use for

Beyond Printables

The most convenient option for your customers will be to integrate POD and drop
shipping with your shop. That way, they won‟t need to search for a printing option when
they buy your stickers.

DIY Printing of Stickers

The final topic I want to cover in this chapter is DIY printing of stickers. I think POD is
best, but some sticker shops on Etsy do offer stickers that can be printed at home.

Keep in mind that you can‟t feature DIY printing for irregularly shaped stickers. People
can buy sheets of stickers at office supply stores, and your stickers will need to line up
with the standard sizes to be printed at home.

If you decide to go the DIY route, here are some pointers:

 Test your stickers at home to make sure they look the way you want them to
look when you print them.
 Include detailed printing instructions with each product. You should include
sticker sizes and anything else to simplify the printing process.
 Stick to standard sizes and if you print to a specific brand, make sure to
mention it.

You may also want to offer some kind of customer support, even if it‟s just an email
address where your customers can ask questions if they run into trouble.

I hope you‟re ready to start creating and selling stickers! In the next and final chapter, I‟ll
offer you some tips on marketing and selling your printable products.

Identifying Your Target Audience

Marketing and selling your starts with identifying your audience. When you‟re first
starting out, your best bet is to stick with one category such as wall art, or stickers.

You can identify your target audience by thinking about:

 The purpose of your products

 The people who already use products like yours
 The people who might not know about printables but who would buy them if
they did know
 Interest groups and hobbies that might attract people who would buy your
products

For example, if you choose to focus on wall art, you might target homeowners and
renters. You might also target people interested in redecorating and interior design.

For educational stickers, you could target teachers and parents, as well as older kids
who might be looking for products to use in their notebooks and planners.

Here are a few tools you can use to research your target audience:

 Google Analytics
 Consumer Barometer, which is also owned by Google
 Searching Reddit for Subreddits (individual forums) about topics related to
your products is a great way to find out who might be interested in your
printable products.
 SEMRush has a Keyword Magic Tool that you can use to identify the
keywords your audience is most likely to use to search for products like yours.

You may also want to check out Facebook groups for related topics to learn how people
talk about printables and which audiences to target.

Keep in mind that you may start by focusing on one audience and later expand your
shop. You can easily do that by creating product categories and choosing new
keywords to target.

How to Optimize Your Etsy Shop and Listings

A key component of driving traffic to your Etsy shop is optimizing your shop and listings.
Here are some pointers to help you do that.

1. Choose a memorable shop name that will give people an idea of what they‟ll
find if they visit you on Etsy.
2. In your shop description, use relevant keywords related to your products and
categories.
3. Always include attractive product photographs with each listing. This is a good
place to use the product mockups we talked about, so that any customer who
views your products knows what they look like and how to use them.
4. Write compelling product descriptions. The most important information about
your product, including written details and specifications, should be at the
beginning. Use short sentences with strong verbs for the best results. You
should make sure to include keywords that are relevant to your products.
5. Avoid using irrelevant keywords or keywords that are too broad. You‟re going
to have a hard time ranking for “planner stickers” because that‟s too broad a
keyword. Instead, try something like “whimsical printable holiday stickers” or
“new baby planning stickers” to help people find your products.
6. Finally, include anything else that may be important to people who are
browsing your shop. For example, you may want to mention that your shop is
integrated with a print-on-demand service or that your products are designed
to work with a particular brand of planner.

It may take some trial and error to optimize your shop. If you don‟t get the traffic you
want at first, don‟t get discouraged. Fine-tune your listings and try again.

Tips for Driving Traffic to Etsy

Driving traffic to Etsy is your responsibility. While Etsy has a huge SEO advantage
because of its size, you cannot count on Etsy to feature your shop.

Here are some methods to try to drive traffic to your Etsy shop:

 Create a Facebook page for your Etsy shop and link to your shop in your cover
image or description.
 Pin images of your products in Pinterest and make them clickable links so
people will be taken directly to your Etsy shop when they click.
 Post your product images and mockups on Instagram and put a link to your
Etsy shop in your profile.
 Create a Twitter feed for your Etsy shop and Tweet images of your products
with links to your shop.
 Post on planner forums and groups and mention your products. If you choose
this option, make sure that you adhere to the forum guidelines about self-
promotion.

Conclusion

Thank you for reading Beyond Printables! I hope you‟ve found the information here to
be helpful and inspiring – and that you‟re excited to build your printables empire!

Here are some tips to help you as you launch (or grow) your business.

1. Don‟t try everything at once. Your best bet is to choose one printable category
and build a shop around it. Once you have had success with that product, you
can either add new categories or build a second shop to expand your
business.
2. Make quality a priority. Poorly designed products will attract negative reviews
that can sink your shop before it ever gets off the ground. You‟ll be better off
starting with a few high-quality products that people love than hundreds of
mediocre ones.
3. Challenge yourself to improve. Creating printables is a skill like any other. The
more you do it, the better you‟ll become. Don‟t be afraid to step outside of your
comfort zone and try new things.
4. Pay attention to your customers‟ comments and reviews. Sometimes,
customers can give you ideas for new products or product categories. If you
get multiple requests for the same product, you can be reasonably confident
that it will be a good seller – so create it!
5. Be persistent. Your shop probably won‟t be an overnight success because it
takes time to attract traffic and make sales. Be consistent, promote your shop
as much as you can, and focus on quality. Your audience will find you!

I want to leave you with a few key points from Beyond Printables to help you as you
build your Etsy shop.
