Alignment & Assessment Observation Reflection Essay

When observing the 4th Grade Math Number Operations: Multiplication & Division
video. The learning objectives I observed were multiplication and division. The lesson that is
being taught is making relationships between adding and multiplying and then subtracting and
dividing, basically how to solve multiplication and division problems. Students were asked to
describe the problems in sentences so the teacher can assess the students and see what they know
or need improvement in. The teacher did have her students engaged and would randomly ask her
students questions.
The learning objective for 5th Grade Adding and Subtracting Fractions was to use
number sense and benchmark fractions to estimate sums and differences, I really like that the
teacher had the students read and understand the learning objective. He was a good job at
explaining and teaching his students how to add and subtract fractions. He also explains to them
different ways to solve the problem. He encourages his students to attempt to solve the problems
and will ask them to explain how they solved the problem or how they came up with the answer.
He also will ask his students if they understand and has them talk to their partner to see how they
came up with answer and will ask them to explain to the class.
In the course of all three videos, there was some formal and informal assessment that the
teachers used throughout the lessons. The teachers would stop thought-out the lesson to make
sure students were understanding the lesson and the concept. They had students solve problems
and work them out step by step. Teachers would ask opened questions. For example: Does
everybody understand, does everybody agree, did everybody have the same answer or a different
way to solve it? The teacher is asking those questions or asking students to solve the problems to
make they are understanding the lesson and if they get the answer wrong the teacher would walk
the student step by step to make sure the understand.
After seeing the teachers teach and explain the learning objectives to their students. As a
future teacher, I would do the same thing the 5th grade teacher did. He has his students listen,
reading and explain what the learning objective was. I would most definitely cover the lesson
tomorrow to make students understood the lesson and review what they didn’t give students
another chance to hear the lesson or ask the question they would like to know or get clarification
on. There’s always students that could use a review and it doesn’t hurt but of course it depends
on the lesson that I’m teaching. I do think it’s important to make sure students understood the
lesson before moving on.
