Politically, there has never been a time in the long life of the Philippines that it existed in isolation from
Asian region as well as the world.

 Historian shows extensive trades with China and maritime Southeast Asia even
before Spaniards came, when Philippines become a colony of Spain and America,
and after we become independent where we took sides in the global Cold war.
 As a result: guns, drugs, merchandise, and illegal immigrants flowed between the
Philippine south, Borneo, Sabah. And southern China.

Despite passionate nationalist warnings about the corrupting influence of Western culture, Filipinos
continue to hold the West high regard.

 English became a largely spoken language, popular culture like basketball to fashion
to hiphop become widely appreciated.

Globalization’s impact has been uneven and often does not benefit most Filipinos. Yet there is progress
when the Philippines at the end of the 20 th century is analyzed.
